I had the day off so I went out to the spot where I've made my winter shelters the last 3 or 4 years.
I wanted to disperse the ash and charred wood from the pit, turn the soil and break down the reflector.
I had a near full ring of cut invasive honeysuckle around the spot to keep the coyotes from sneaking up on me at night. I burned about half the ring in the pit during the last big snow we had so what's left stays for next winter. I'll restore the full ring over the summer so it's ready to go come fall.
Arrival.
Took a while to clear this with my little GI shovel.
Tools for the day.
Pulled out the pick side of the shovel and turned the ground then removed my tarp frame.
BATONING BREAK!
Had a visitor. They had a rough winter.
Then I dispersed the fallen down reflector and made a rake out of some of that invasive stuff to cover the pit with leaves.
Some pics from the last few years showing changes. First ones from first shelter type. Last ones from this last winter. I even planted grass here one spring. It was quickly taken over but grew in pretty thick before it was.
A-Frame
This was the year I cleared all the dead leaves and weeds and tried growing grass.
Stripped and seeded.
Watching the grass grow a few weeks later.
And a week later.
Changed to lean-to with sides.
Nylon tarps the last winter.
Looking forward to next fall/winter!
