Spring in Lock-back folder

I am working on my first folding knife - I am using information from a book by Frank Centofante.

I just have one question, the spring portion when put under pressure gives but does not bounce back as I expect. Can I assume that this spring will work as required after it has been heat-treated?

The spring is designed like a "Y" with one part functioning as the button for the lock and the other portion acting as the spring.

It has to be hardened for it to bounce back.If not, it will just bend. Make sure you use the dimensions given in the book for thickness, and width of the spring, and have it heat treated to the right RC. If its to soft it will wear out fast, to hard it will break, to thin it will break, to thick it won't bend.If it has some give to it now, I think it will probably work.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

It does have to be heat treated for it to work. You may find that after heat treating it is too hard to move. Carefully grind it a little thinner. Dont get it hot!!

There is no such thing as "good enough", either your work is good or it is not. How is your work?

Great - that is what I was hoping to hear. I figured that if it was too stiff I could work it down after the heat treat.

Thanks for the responses - all of you are so helpful!!
