Earlier this morning I went outside looking for something to do, and I decided to make a spring snare. This isnt really a how-to, I just snapped a couple pictures of the process!

The goods

Components of the trap made

Cord tied to the sappling, and trigger tied halfway down the string

Forked stick in the ground for the trigger to fold under

Trigger set by wedging the trigger stick in between an anchor point, and the trigger attached to the string.

Add bait (preferably before you set the trap) Fin. :D
and a knife shot

Too many finicky parts in this set up. Wind, rain and snow will set it off. Takes awhile to discover correct locations, openings and height above ground for snares but once you've got it right the proof is in the pudding. Trapped many dozens of snowshoe hares and cottontails as a kid and when trying to teach the teenage Indians in n. Ontario the same thing, 10 years ago, local timber wolves and a solitary wolverine set up shop behind us; nothing but taut broken wires, footprints and fur left behind, every GD day.
Well worth learning though. If lost in the woods and able to catch fish and maybe the odd squirrel or rabbit you can actually last for a long time.

I usually result to shooting my squirrels when I want to eat :D but ive caught a few this way. Its definitely not something to depend on. The first time I made this trap I made it behind our barn and ended up catching a stray cat around the paw. No joke. The cat was perfectly fine when I released it but it took off like a rocket. Now and again it shows up. I guess the cat sees me as the person that freed it and not the thing that got it trapped in the first place!
