Spring Temper

I've been thinking of trying the simple pen knife folder in Tim McCreight's book over the holidays. Rather than treating the spring by color with a torch, I thought I'd do it in the evenheat. Could someone suggest an appropriate hardness for 'spring temper'?

Thanks

Rob!

For some reason I can remember the devils number is 666 which happens to be almost the perfect temperature for springs. Works for me. 10 minutes soak time is plenty because springs are thin. If you have a way of rockwell testing shoot for 47-49 and do some compression tests. Adjust the tempering ranges to suit your steel choice and application.

Bruce, I've been looking for that number for a while! Thanks.

Now to jump off in a crazy direction, would CR be springy if hardened to 45 in super quench? Not planing on putting it on any folders, just wodering what a person in need of some cheap auto leaf springs might do. The particular case I have in mind doesn't allow recycling springs because welding is involved, and I owuld loose temper.

Actually another thing would be custom fish hooks. They need at least spring hardness. And as odd as it may sound there is a demand for custom hooks. What is a low cost source of low carbon wire I wonder?
