Anybody have any information on who makes the knives that Springfield Armory offers on its Website at:http://www.springfield-armory.com/s...&category_id=4700c783923c09af0d82a75afa581c4b
Things like blade size, steel, other details.
They've got a 1-800 number to call for information and I'll probably do that, but wanted to see if anyone had any experience or knowledge here first. The two models that they "retail" for $119 are available for $29 if you buy a gun.

I have to wonder about the quality, they have ZERO product info on the website, Nothing about steel or handle materials where they are manufactured.

If the information within this site is correct, then at least we now know that the range is German made

I know this is pretty flimsy to go on but take a close look at the spring clip design and tanto blade grind itself on this Springfield Tanto

And compare it with this near similar 'cut'

Could these Springfield knives be be manufactured by Eickhorn?

Its a wild guess, but I would think the steel to be either 440C or ATS34. Or something similar that's German.

Let us know your findings.

Krizzard,
I admit I'm not much of a detective, and didn't do that much searching. The Eickhorn model you pointed out was the closest I could find. The blade seems to be about the right length, although a bit shorter if my conversion is right, and are from Solingen.
The person I talked with at Springfield was no help. She just repeated the information on the Web page, and nothing else. She didn't even know the blade length of one of the knives they're offering, the M6 Scout Knife.
I think I'll give the Tanto a try, at $29. I do believe in the quality of Springfield's guns, so I'm sure they wouldn't sell a bad knife. Thanks for your help.

So until such time when the truth is made known, we shall all continue to presume that Springfield has outsourced this knife range to Eickhorn of Solingen, Germany; or is it the other way round?

Also could you please, give us your honest opinion about the quality of the knife once you've tried it out. And do try to post it here.

BTW, I kind of like the Tanto myself too, the other two of the range don't have the WOW! factor IMO.

Oh, and welcome to the forums! :-)

Well, the truth has been made known.

Joerg Eickhorn, managing director for the Eickhorn-Solingen company of Solingen, Germany, replied to my e-mail saying, "Yes, we make the knives for Springfield Armory. You made a good guess."

Actually, Krizzard made a good guess.

Mr. Eickhorn also said, "The steel we use is 440A with a hardness of approximately 54 HRC."

I do have a couple on order from Springfield because I had a coupon that offered them for about $30 for the tanto blade and $25 for another style that looked interesting. I figured you can't go wrong at that price, so I'm glad to know they're made by a company with a good reputation. They're listed at $119 and $89.

I've been impressed by Mr. Eickhorn's helpfulness, which tells me he's probably good at the details of knife-making as well.

Thanks Texian, for going all the way on this!

I reckon Eickhorn has been trying real hard at penetrating the US market for sometime now. It's too bad that they had lost out in so many high profile US military tenders. But, I guess that's just the way it has to be, for now at least.

Still, IMO they have made, and will continue to make really fine German quality knives for military use; and now with this trend of manufacturing commercial knives for the ordinary consumer. Maybe this way, they might make their mark finally??!

Glad to note that you got to buy them at a real steal. I just know you would enjoy your new "pocket pals" for a while yet :-)
