Hi all,
We have what I *think* is a very early Model 1795 Springfield Musket socket bayonet. I believe it is early because I think it is a bottom lug mortise, and if I've been reading correctly the early 1795s had a bottom mount bayonet lug, which was later switched to a top mount lug. My question is this: Were ALL these bayonets stamped "US", or were some of the very early ones not stamped? The only markings I've been able to find anywhere on the thing is one number, either a 6 or a 9, just in front of the mortise on the socket. The dimensions of the weapon are: Overall Length: 19 1/2" (approx), Blade Length: 17", Socket Length: 2 13/16", Mortise Length: 1 1/2". The fluting on the blade extends from tip all the way to the end of the blade where it meets the elbow. Any help would be appreciated, folks. This one has me a little stumped.
