Howdy -

I'm looking for a 45, and have it kind of narrowed down to these two. -
Pretty light weight / Pricing is comparable, both come with 2 clips, both come with molded holsters etc..
Shot a friend's Glock 45 and was pretty impressed - but have no experience with the Springfields.

Any thoughts as to which is the most reliable/accurate/easy to maintain etc /take a beating?

What is the max range that I whould be looking to get out of it consistently (Pie plate)?

One of the reasons why I am leaning toward the 45, is there is potential to hunt with that cal here, or worst case carry as a back up on a bear hunt..but don't want another revolver.

Go with the XD. It shoots incredible. I had both, the XD in my opinion shoots better.

I assume you are referring to the Springfield XP series rather than the 1911s. You really need to handle both as the grip angles and shape do differ. This will most likely make one point more naturally than the other. You should be able to close your eyes, bring the gun up to eye level and then open your eyes and have the sights close to lining up. If you have to cock your wrist to get them to line up you might want to pick a different model.

The Glocks and the XP are both fine, well made guns...it is going to boil down to which feels best to you. I would add that you may want to try a Smith & Wesson M&P45 as well. I have shot several and liked them quite well. I like the addition of the optional thumb safety on the S&W as well.

Which Glock .45 model did you look at? There is the 21, 21SP, 30 and 36, with some others coming out soon.

And did you handle the Springfield XD, or 1911? It makes a difference.

personally i lean toward the glock {36}awesome piece, but a good friend of mine who has both the glock and the xd prefers the springfield. you really need to handle both and go with what feels the best. but really either way you go you win. btw a .45 out of a 4" barrel is just going to really annoy a bear.

I've got a G36 and I really love it

I've also got an XD9 Service (4") model which I also really love :)

The single stack G36 is smaller, slicker and very comfortable to shoot for being a small .45cal. I think this observation carries over to the XD45 (I think it is a little thicker than the G36). The Glock is thinner and more streamlined (I'm not sure about the double stack G30). The Glock pistols have a different grip angle - whether that is an advantage, disadvantage or neither is subjective.

The XD9 is very smooth to shoot and probably a bit more accurate - though the difference between comparable Glock, Springfield, H&K and other good quality pistols is very small IMO. The XD series has more user friendly controls at the expense of a little thickness - and being less streamlined.

Both pistols have a similar manual of arms. The Springfield platform has a grip safety though and a fully supported chamber making it arguably a little "safer". The Glocks have been around longer and enjoy an excellent reputation for absolute reliability - while the XD thus far enjoys the same, it does not have the "length of service track record" yet due to being relatively new to the market.

If concealment is not an issue I would personally go with the 5" XD45. I think it is a bit more accurate than the G21 but in the end it is really just a matter of personal preference.

Glock rules any day over the Springfield XD series! Trust me!,,,VWB.

I would suggest you shoot both and go with which ever one you like the best. I owned a Glock 22 in .40 Cal and now own a Springfield XD Service in .40 Cal. I like the Springfield better. I personally don't think you could go wrong with either.

Best of Luck and let us know what you end up getting!

Go with the Glock and if the 21 feels too bulky, check out the 21SF. Also the 36 if you are looking for a compact.

If you are talking about a Springfield 1911, I'd say get the Springfield. If you are talking tupperware get the Glock, there is a reason that they are on the hips of half or so of the police men and women in this country.

Try them both and see which you like better. I've shot both and like the XD better. But then again, the Glock 17 isn't to bad. ;)

I haven't shot the springfield, but I do recommend the glock 21 if it fits your hand.

i like the 1911 in .45 myself, the glock 21 is a great gun but the grip is pretty thick, almost too thick for me and i have large hands, of course ya could get a grip reduction, the springfield XD .45s are good too, i like 'em a lot, i still would prefer a 1911 myself though.

Aww come on, you have to at least consider a real 45, the 1911.
I just got this one Friday.

Doesn't it look nice? You should at least go and look at some 1911s. You know, pick up a few, see how they feel, look at some of the various models, and brands. I'm sure you could find something you like:).Patrick

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Well - now I have gone full circle.
Speaking to my Brother in law last night, he recommended that if I want to get the most range/power out of the Pistol to go with a 40 Cal.

He said he had a 45, but recomended that if I want to be able to accurately shoot past 25 yards - to go with the 40.

So....

right now I am really leaning toward the glocks, went and handled a few different models yesterday - will keep you posted as to how this turns out.

Go with the Glock have owned both and still have the Glock. Shoot it much better and very accurate also.

Glock, the springfield XD fullsize I had jammed, not often but it did. My glock 30 has never failed between 2 & 3000 rounds ymmv.

I have 3 XDs and 2 glocks. I prefer the trigger on the XD and it is more comfortable in the hand.
