Some folks store their knives in an open position. I'm thinking it is to save the spring.

Are knife springs puny? Clock and gun springs have lasted for hundreds of years without problems.

It would seem there is a greater risk of dinging up the blade leaving it in an open position all the time.

well Ive heard of more than one broken spring in automatic knife. As far as I know in single action knives its better to store them in open position to reduce tension on spring, in D/A knives it doesn't matter.

No sir they are not. But yes it does help to keep the spring in good shape. I think in only a liner lock may be prone to this kind damage. Although, it will still take a long, long time.

If you are planning storing them for for a few decades, it may be a good idea, but if it's just your regular EDC, keeping them closed is fine.
