Making camp

Fire preparation took up the bulk of our time. Definitely not a time to cut corners or shortcut

Brother MUD made us a nice fire, but everyone did their part.

I think this camp wins the award for the most shelter set up and not used.

Great pics, though. Thanks for sharing

Thanks I loved your photos

Many thanks for the kind words!

hahahaha, wow. How on earth did that happen?

You got to explain the last photo!

Ok, as we were walking back up to the trail head we heard a loud bang. Seconds later a black smoke filled the air. As we got to the parking lot there was a mini-fan that just blew up while parked. We talked to the girl who owned the van and she actually said sorry for blocking all the traffic and almost catching your cars on fire. A tree near the van caught fire and the fire depatment needed to chop it down.

Trapped and waiting.

nice pictures and hike. Is that stove just out there or what?

Angeles National Forest was the scene of the "Great Hiking Era"(1880's through the early 1930's) in which thousands of people hiked into the local mountains with packs on their backs. Roadless travel was the name of the game and a unique form of outdoor recreation had come into being. Sturtevant's Camp was a popular gathering spot from the start. Built in 1892 by Wilbur M. Sturtevant, the resort was situated on a gently sloping bench in the upper Big Santa Anita Canyon under a canopy of big cone spruce, big leaf canyon maple, canyon live oak and laurel bay.
Sturtevant Camp is the last survivor from this colorful era.
All the spots in that camp and many in Angeles Forest have the same stoves.

Never get bored of your trips bro:thumbup: I wish I had friends who could go on overnighters all the time.

Please tell me how to get there. I live in Whittier and plan on starting to go backpacking with my gf very soon.

Your trip looks like it was great! Love the photo of the exploded mini-van through the reflection in the glasses.

Whittier, my old hang out (Hadley & Greenleaf).

605 N to 210 w, exit Santa Anita and go N or toward the mountains.

Nice. I grew up here.

Any particular place I'm looking for to park then hike?

Unless somethings blocked on the road you can also get there through La Canada; take the Angeles Crest exit off the 210.

Chantry Flats, wow, I used to spend a lot of time up there.

I used to ride my bike from Big Tujunga Canyon to Lancaster too. I wouldn't recommend trying that nowdays.

I was about 10 when we were up there (Chantry Flats) and started down the road into the campground when 3 teenagers in a VW came up the road backwards and nearly pushed up off the road. My dad got out and started to really give them hell. It turns out the car would only go in reverse, and they were going to try and drive it that way all the way back to Palmdale. (That was before 14 became a major freeway, and the cutoff ran over Angeles Crest.) I never found out if they made it, but think about that every now and then.

Awesome pics dude, especially the sunnies!

Its always great to see your gangs adventures.

Great photo's! Based on the food prep pics, you guys were really roughing it. Now I gotta make a snack!

Looks like a great trip, I'm craving some camp time again now !!!!

Always enjoy your pics, thanks for sharing them !

It's an odd thing to point out but you seem to take sausage and cheese on a lot of hikes, lol:)
Thank you once again for sharing your great pics, these ones seem to have very vivid colors, especially the first few.

We like easy to cook stuff that doesn't really need to be cooked. I like the vivid setting on my camera, not so flat looking.

Thanks for the pics. Everything was unicorns and lollipops till the last photo.
I like the shock factor, it was just that way for us too. Nice hike and people then...BAM!

Not rough at all.

Good times for sure. We definitely had some very nice luxuries this trip. My pack is getting lighter every trip with the more skill I gain.

Can't wait to get back outdoors!
