Hi i have the above mentioned stones use them all the time pulled them out of there case yesterday and they somehow came apart . There is no damage to either stone . Already contacted spyderco they want me to send them in i would guess there just gonna glue them back together . Anybody see this before should i just glue em back together if so whay kind of glue should i use or just go ahead and send them back. Thanks Rich

I'd send 'em back. There's a good chance they will just glue them back together, but seeing HOW they failed will help them improve their process.

If you want to re-glue them yourself, I'd use tape to mask off all surfaces you don't want gunk on, and use 3M Super-77.

I've heard of this happening, though not very frequently. I have two of the DoubleStuff hones, and at times I've actually wished I could deliberately separate the halves and re-glue them. Neither of mine were lined up very squarely from the factory.

It's good that Spyderco is going to take care of you on this. My main concern, in trying to re-glue them, would be getting the old, hardened adhesive/epoxy off. Sometimes the old glues/epoxies get in the way of a good bond, if not cleaned up. And sometimes that's not easy. I do think epoxy is probably the best solution, though. I'd bet that's what Spyderco will use, to fix this.

Whats strange to me is that as far as i know they were fine last time i used them i could see this happening if they were dropped or were jostled around in pack or something but they werent . It looks to me like theres hardley any glue residue at all on the sepparated pieces and whats there will probably come right off i sent spyderco a email and told them it seems silly to send them back i have all kinds of glue and asked what they would recommend to use they replied that gorrila glue or gorrilla epoxy would work . The only glue i dont have of course ! The more i think abought it i now have 4 stones instead of 2 why couldnt i just use the sides that were glued to sharpen as long as i can get the little bit of glue thats left off ? If that doesnt work i can either glue them myself was thinking silicone got new tube right here or just send them back 2 to 3 week wait they told me .

It's been a good while since I read about the others that came apart. I think, in one case, the poster mentioned washing his hone in hot water, after which the the two sides came apart. Don't know how hot, or if there were other factors involved (solvents, chemicals, etc.). In the other case, I think it was from someone who'd accidentally dropped the hone, and a piece of one side came off (separated and fractured, in one fell swoop).

Guess it's your call, if you want Spyderco to fix it or not. If they're willing to do it, that might be the safe thing to do. If I were 'experimenting' with trying to do it myself, it may not be too hard to use something like silicon carbide or aluminum oxide sandpaper to scrub off the adhesive (whatever it may be). Maybe even some regular sandpaper, like the garnet abrasive type, for wood. That might be aggressive enough to scrub off the adhesive, but not hard enough to damage or alter the ceramic. Steel wool might even work, though the steel would likely load up the surface of the ceramic, as with a knife blade.
