Spyder-Camp

Just returned from a camping trip with my son's class. Before you die, everyone should try camping with 50 kids, 20 parents in 40 degree rainy Alaskan weather.....

Anyway, I took my Moran and Military. I took the Moran since it was small and the Military in case I needed to cut something heavy or needed a knife I knew I could count on.

They both worked like a charm but I wanted to test the Moran for edge holding. The knife did great. I cut rope, sticks for marshmellows, I whittled countless logs to get rid of the wet exterior so they would burn better and guess what? The knife was still sharp at the end.

The other thing I want to report is that don't worry about re-sharpening this knife. I used the Spydie Sharpmaker and the knife was razor sharp again in no time, Moran edge or not. This knife is a winner! All the other dads were jealous of my Spydie

The Military was my back up and I have used that knife since November and last night was the first time I have touched the blade up and it didn't really need it anyway. The one negative thing about the Military was when I was cutting wood, small chips would get lodged behind the Ti liner and would temporarily prevent the knife from closing until I jarred the piece loose or blew it out. Not a big concern but something I wasn't expecting.

Spyder-Camp was a success. VG-10 is a great steel. The Moran is for real.

Regards.

Greg,

Glad you survived

! That Moran is without doubt the sleeper of the last few years. Folks who pass on it are simply unaware of just what a small fixed blade can do... in the field or kitchen.

As for those chips, that's a common problem when whittling with any open back knife. Same with loose coins getting caught in the action while carrying in ones pocket.

Got the Spydie mini-police and its a keeper. Replaced the neck chain with a big 30" flat cut which is definately a man's chain unlike the thin one supplied with the MN07S. i also used a Bonanza kit to gold fill the Spydie emblem on the Ti handle. Looks really nice that way.

You also should be getting your 532MS soon as mine arrived yesterday as well. Much, much better

Take care!

Interesting. Fixed blade for its small size, folder for its strength. Sounds like Spyderco has reversed the way we look at knives?

Outlaw.....great post! I didn't even think of it that way, but I guess you're right. I never worked the Moran before and I have never used a knife with VG-10. I have used the serrated Military and it has my full confidence. Since I was going to be with my son I wanted a knife I could trust and I immediately thought of the Military in case the Moran wasn't up for the job.

Well, the Moran was and I could have <gasp> left the Military at home and have been fine.

Good observation.

Bob, great idea on the Gold Fill! I have a Thai chain that I put on mine, looks nice. Danelle, I can bring it along sometime and do yours. I also have black fill, I think I will do mine in black and scan and post. Kodiak, sounds like a nice sunny day! I spent the weekend with 150 kids and 30 knife loving Scouters. Lots of nice steel floating around. Sharpened a ton of Spyderco and CS serrated for the Scouts and Scouters.

Greg, glad to hear the Moran was up to the tasks. I just got one last week, and got the River City Sheath in just today for it. So, I'm pretty much set.

I need a Military, though, I'm afraid. I'm holding out, or trying to, for the rumored Military with rolling lock; at least I think that's the rumor. I just saw a friends older Military this weekend, with the ATS-34 blade, and even that one inspired confidence. It appeared as if the guy had used it quite a bit, and it was still plenty tight.

Glad you had fun on your camping trip

. Sounds like all too many of mine have turned out. I don't think I have ever gone backpacking without getting rained on. The trouble is, I rarely can manage to stay in the woods more than a couple of nights for one reason or another; yet, the rain still always catches me. Oh well, at least it's cooler that way. Right?
