I was playing with my macro lens today and took a few quick and dirty photos.

M4 blade in a Manix 2, with lots of patina:

Very nice.

What are your camera settings and lens? Canon/Nikon?

You can really see the pores on the M4 steel.

The triangle on the spider mouth is different in those. 1 of them is a fake.

Just kidding. Cool shots!

I didn't study the shapes of the graphics too closely, and there are lots of things that could explain the differences. First of all the Manix is made in USA, the Delica in Japan. I had noticed the different textures though.

But it got me to thinking so I pulled out all of the Spyders in my EDC rotation and checked them under a magnifier. There are slight differences in the shape of the graphic depending on where the models are made, but there is also a significant difference in the textures. Some have a texture as if they were hit in a grid by individual laser beams, somewhat like the pictures I posted. The strange thing is that the newest models, the Cruwear Military, Cruwear Manix and S110V Manix all have dark images that have no texture that I could see.

Here's a picture with the logo's and where they're from. I grabbed it from the Spyderco forum a while back. Can't remember whom to credit though.

Holy crap.. That is a nice macro lens. Cool shots to see the spiders designs in detail man.

The photo was taken with a Phoenix 100mm macro lens on a Nikon D300 DSLR, of course the lens is doing all of the work. The Phoenix lens (I don't recall if it is 90mm or 100mm) is not an expensive macro lens but is good for its price, and in that focal length range it is relatively easy to manufacture a good lens for a low price. This lens will focus to 1:1 so the spyder image is the same size on the camera sensor as it is on the blade, and the 1.5 crop factor makes it even larger when you print it, plus I cropped the photo a little bit.

I did not take time to set up good lights and a tripod. The photos were taken with a single desk lamp, hand-holding the camera.
