Every Spydie I have has come insanely sharp out of the box. The problem is that I can never quite seem to get them all the way back to that original level. I have a Sharpmaker and feel like I'm reasonably competent at sharpening (maybe not though  ). I can get them back to shaving sharp but it still feels a bit rougher than the factory edge. Any advice?? I think I've seen some ultra-fine sharpmaker rods floating around online... perhaps I need those. Maybe Spyderco just has some kind of super-secret magical sharpening action going on that us mere mortals can never hope to duplicate..... :p

Did you just recently get your Sharpmaker? The stones need to "break in." It's recommended to rub them together to help that process.

Are you using the 40 or 30 degree setting? If you're using the 30, then maybe your not getting to the actual edge, and are only hitting above it on the bevel -- try the magic marker trick. Depending on how dull the blade got, it may take significant time & number of strokes on the stones to restore it. Some use sandpaper or other sharpening stones that have a coarser grit to bet the bevel re-established.

Finally, I have the UT stones, and I really like the polished edge (looks & performance) that I get with them. They're not a bad purchase in my opinion.
