Spyderco Air.. and a modding question.

Okay guys so I got my Spyderco Air a couple of months back and absolutely love the knife. My only complaint is the lack of a pocket clip, which I know some knives don't need them and the air is one of them.

However, I prefer to have a pocket clip if possible and I do believe it IS possible. I think the knife has just enough room to be tapped for a tip up wire clip. That would be ideal because the knife would then be riding low clipped to my pocket.
Actually it may not be riding super low because it appears the clip would need to be tapped a little higher up on the handle due to the milling in the liners.
But it's still doable.

It appears to be a simple mod, but...
I don't have the tools and don't know how to do this.
So I was wondering if you guys know anyone that can and would want to take the project on?

I just need it tapped.

I would love other opinions on if you think it can or can't be done, why, what you think of the idea, and of course names of people who can take on the job. :D

Thanks guys,
Jessie

STR is generally the most recommended for pocket clip mods, he has a sub-forum in the makers section.

My first thought would also be to contact STR for anything related to pocket clips, but his focus is on his Ti low rider clips usually to fit already factory tapped. There should be some forum service providers that can tap a hole for you to install a Spyderco style wire clip that you want. Perhaps you can make a request at the Wanted Services subforum.

Have you thought of getting a slip case for your Air? Perhaps a custom fit Paul Long or a small Sebenza leather case will work well. Allows you to pocket carry along with an additional clipped larger knife or keys etc. without scratching the knife.

+1 to the carry case. It's easier from a machining perspective, and then you can carry that big 'ol XM as a backup.

Some carry cases also come with a pocket clip if you want to make the Air your primary.

I'm not so familiar with Spydercos, but it looks like the clips on some, like the Chaparral, are not tapped at all. They seem to simply "plug in" to holes in the handle slab, and stay there, I guess, by spring tension.

That might be a DIY job.

Also, now that I think about it, you can buy individual drills and taps at hardware stores. The drills are a couple dollars, the taps are a couple more. The total is much less than you spent on the Air itself.

Carry case it is! For some unknown reason I didn't even think of that lol.

Well, you have to screw down the little prongs of the wire clip so it will stay, so that hole is indeed tapped. However the little slots are not.
But looks like I'll try and find a little slip case. =]

Thanks guys.

yup, go with a small sheath that has a clip. I'm thinking of making a small kydex one with a deep-carry.

Offhand, no. But I also have a couple of those leather card holders that I'm not using, and I might use those too. Can probably make 2 sheaths from one of them. Will let you know when I gain some headway!

i can point you to a sheath maker that is all the rage on a different website may get in trouble for posting it here but check out lifters leather his sheaths are bad a$$ www.liftersleather.com looks like hes already got some made that may fit the air you'd just haft to call to make sure. you can get one hes already made or get on custom made, either the flap kind with the snap button or a custom one molded to your knife would be awesome. I highly suggest you check out his work he is awesome. he makes sheaths with pocket clips as well so you could have your air in a sheath attached to your pocket without a clip and 1. its protected, and 2. you don't haft to risk voiding the warranty by modding it in case you ever wanna get rid of it.

Awesome thanks guys. I'm looking into one to maybe get in the future.
Also looking on here for people that have pouches they could trade.

Thanks for all the great ideas.
