Just ordered a SE version of this. I'd never even heard of one until tonight and I like the looks of it.
I'm left handed but have been carrying a Rookie in the RF pocket so I'll rotate these two.

Anyone on here have one? What are your thoughts?

Underated knife. It's liked and respected by spyderknuts but almost no one else ever sees or hears about them. I really like the blade size and shape. It is a very, very good cutting and slicing knife.

Perhaps if it had come out in a different configeration things would have been different. But then, it wouldn't be the R2. :)

Hi Paradiggum,

As Mastiff said, it's an interesting design platform but one that did not appeal to other than knife afi's.

When I designed the knife, I felt it served a good size in an easy to carry package, but I think "tube frame" concept turned some people off. I've got another "tube frame" design in the works but it's evolved some.

I've considered using the R2 design for a sprint with the same pattern, but a more conventional platform. Something like full G-10 or Carbon Fiber scales with a skeltonized liner, full flat VG-10 blade.

Ive had 1 for a couple of years. I'd use it more if it was pe. I carry it every so

often. Its a great knife but I dont use a mid or large size se that much.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm really looking forward to this package arriving. I think it's a good looking knife.
I actually have 3 coming. One for the collection, one to carry and maybe one as a gift.

Sal, thanks for taking the time to reply. I've carried Spyderco knives for years. The D3 was my fav for about 11 years until last January when I got a D4. I've picked up close to 100 Spyderco knives this year and 3 more about an hour ago. :) Without a doubt my favorite company for folding knives.
Of all the knives I've bought this year and before even I've only ever had issue with 1. A G10 Byrd had the holes for LH carry stripped. Since I decided to gift it to a RH user because of that, it's a non-issue.

Thanks for making a great product. A Spyderco, of one kind or another has been a constant companion (D3 in particular) longer than any other brand or item I've ever owned.

Now my biggest problem is what to grab each morning on my way out the door. Not a bad problem to have.

The R2 is a great knife. It is ergonomic, about a perfect size for an EDC, and it is an excellent cutter. I had the tip of mine made into a splinter picker tip by STR, and for me that made a great knife. I'd love to see a new sprint run, I just wonder how much more weight would be added by going to G-10 slabs over liners. I really liked how the R2 was super light and thin with plenty good traction, but getting a version that's heavier and a bit thicker with G-10 would certainly be a great knife and help to appeal to more of an audience.

I've always liked the R2 design and think that the ones with the skeletonized blade are very unique. Maybe it's just that the Q was my first spyderco, but I have a soft spot for those laser-cutouts in the blades. Hopefully the new tube frame concept gets offered with a cut-out blade, even if just for a small run. I'd buy one!

Maybe it's just that I have short thumbs Sal, but I'd rather see the original R shaped blade (minus the cutouts) on a Stretch. The R and R2 just isn't as comfortable to open, always feel like I have to stretch my thumb to open it. Even tried having STR mod the handle on one to be more Stretch-like, but it didn't help.

I like R2. Used to EDC PE for about a year about 3-4 years ago. Great ergos, light, compact in the pocket. Love the handle. Blade is OK. 3.5" is my favorite length, but I wasn't crazy about the tip and blade is little too wide for my taste. Caly3.5 took care of this issues. If Spyderco would marry R2 handle with Caly3.5 blade I will be certainly interesting.

Package came in the mail today. These are some nice knives. Very smooth, very light and very comfortable.
If the clip was reversible it be a contender for my main EDC.
I'd never heard of these until I saw them on an online retailer and already having many Spyderco knives I had no problem pulling the trigger sight unseen.
I'm pleased I did.
