I was just curious if anyone at spyderco was interested in making another balisong? i know there were troubles with the spyderfly and a lot of controversy for flippers on the szabofly and smallfly but it seems like a good time to use that spydie magic and make another appearance in the bali world

Probably not, it would probably be to much trouble to go through all of the legal stuff. But hey, you never know.

I'm guessing that when a company is restricted to LEO and military customers the already limited market for Balisongs, which are generally purchased as toys rather than tools, shrinks to the level where they just are not a viable product.

@bd51 - all the legal stuff entails is that the parts be manufactured and assembled in the US instead of imports

@ The Deacon - Balis arent restricted to LEO's and Military if thats what your saying, there are still many states that more then allow for citizens to carry balis and while they are fun to flip ive had several like my Bm42 hold up to more work then several folders so they are also quite viable tools IMO

With most all BM balis now between $250/$500 ---- Spyderco could make a TON OF MONEY with a new balis -- something that LOCKS in both the open/closed position and has straight handles for the flipability ---- beside , I am having trouble finding more lagre Szabos/Spyderflys !!!

@DaBird - IIRC colorado law states that a bali cant lock open which why spyderco made them that way

Hiya Bro,
Yes , that is true --- BUT , Sal and Co. could come up with a "fix" --- make/send a seperate locking latch with the bali that the end user could put in if they so choose.

Wish you were right, but you're obviously unaware of the special restrictions imposed on Spyderco by the 10th Circuit Court. This thread may give you a better understanding of the facts, as may downloading and reading the PDF of the Spyderco 2009 SAS (Save and Serve) Guide either here, or here.

just read that ridiculously long post, and thank you Deacon for that, you were correct i did not know.

but just for clarification the main problems that spyderco ran into was that they were
1. importing automatic knife parts
2. mailing automatic knives via USPS
3. interstate commerce of automatic knives

that being said would a spyderco factory outside of colorado be able to sell balisongs or is it just illegal for them to sell autos and balis to private citizens altogether
