So I was just perusing the Vallotton family's website Valknives.com. As I was reading Butch Valloton's biography the very last line said this:

Spyderco is presently considering one of my designs.

WHA WHA WHAT?!

I need to know more about this. I've always had a very deep interest in Butch Vallotton's work and a Spyderco/Vallotton collaboration sounds amazing! Is it a brand new knife? Is it one of Butch's automatic opening desings? WILL SPYDERCO BE MAKING A DUAL ACTION AUTO?!?! Oh man I am intrigued and need to know more.

Please Sal. Tell us more. Even the slightest bit of info will sustain me for quite some time.

I believe I saw the concept at the Blade Show over the Summer. I don't remember much but I do recall that it was a manual folder in the form I handled it in. I think it had a liner lock and had thumbstuds that acted as bladestops as well as the Spyderhole. It was fairly heavy and was a bolstered design. My memory fails me on any more details.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but do know that at the very least there is a concept piece. :)

Sweet. I would really love to see pictures although I know that won't happen. All I can think about now is a leaf spring powered D/A Spydie.

I'm pretty sure there was a D/A Spydie at a Spyderco booth somewhere a year or two ago with Vallotton's design. Looked a bit like a Caly3.

I need confirmation of this. Not saying I don't believe you, but this the first I'm hearing of this. Where's Sal? Sal?

I believe that's the Samaritan. I know that's an automatic, and a Vallotten design.

Search over at the Spyderco Factory Forum and you will find threads and pics of the prototype Samaritan, dual release, liner lock, leaf blade, G10 scales.

I hope that this knife gets produced.

However, spyderco's location in Colorado isn't optimal for automatics. A sister production plant here in Oregon might be just the ticket, however. :D

:eek::eek: Just saw the pics and now I absolutely have to own a Samaritan. It looks like a large Caly blade with a Para-Military type handle. Obviously it looks like an amazing knife. I'm salavating of the prospect of this one.

I need Sal, or Kristi, or someone to throw me a bone here and let me know if there is even a % of a chance that this may happen.

I fully agree!

Hey Deac, was there talk of full production or was it one of those protos that faded away?
Far as I can recall, there've been some problems getting the bugs worked out of it, but it's still somewhere in the pipeline. As has been mentioned, checking around on the Factory Forum might yield some more info.

I'm not one of the "cool kids" who're allowed to have automatics legally, so I don't really pay a lot of attention to them. Not to mention the only ones I find attractive are "old school" Italian switchblades. :o

Thanks for the info Deac. I'm not legally allowed to even look at an auto in NY, but it doesn't stop me from collecting. :D I just really dig Butch Vallotton's work and obviously dig Spyderco knives so this is just an amazing collaboration for me.

Hi Tony,

The first Butch Vallotin collaboration that we began was the Samaritan. It was a "mutha" to develop. It's a dual action auto, but we had a few things that we wanted that took some time to work out. Then we had an "issue" with ICE over some auto things and it took another long while to get it sorted.

We've done a few protos that work well and we plan to make the model in small amounts. The project is not tabled, just slow.

Butch is a great designer and inventor and we felt the need to get something else going because we are so slow on the Samaritan, so Butch made up a design for us that we're doing engineering on now. It's not an auto or spring assisted knife. A manual Spyderco. A nice design.

Thanks so much Sal. I look forward to both of them, but obviously I'm really amped about the Samaritan. Any other info on the other design? Materials or dimensions? Also, I know that you like to carry Protots Sal. Have you ever carried a Samaritan?
