spyderco and sharpening notches

Do you guys wish spyderco would put a sharpening notch on all their folders. The issue I have is the heel of the blade is difficult to sharpen without one.

Hate em. Worthless. Good for nothing but snagging on material. The heel is even harder to sharpen with a notch because it isn't even there!! It is really that simple in my opinion. Would you rather have an unsharpened 1/8" of flat metal or a 1/8" gap? Apparently many prefer the gap. Can't understand it myself.

Totally agree,

Spyderco has already done this on a few models and it makes me very sad. Perfect example is the Slysz Bowie, I was about to purchase it but went with the K2 instead, just couldn't get over that "choil", such a waste on a beautiful knife.

I own only the CalyIII (ZDP/CF), but Spyderco is one company I appreciate for how well they do a notchless choil - that Caly was razor sharp all the way to the guard when i got it, and I've not had a problem sharpeneing the heel on my DMT hones. On many knives, the choil notch does help me sharpen all the way.

Agreed. Can't stand it on my SNG and glad it's not there on my PM2, even if that probably is the dullest part of the knife.

I don't have a problem sharpening no-choil blades.

I'd prefer no sharpening choil but it's not a factor in my decision to buy.

Depends. I can't get about an 1/8th inch on the millie and PM2 but all other spydercos I have no issue hitting the entire edge

NO! I'm glad that at least one company doesn't put 'em on most of their models.

Absolutly what he said!^^^^^

I've come to dislike most sharpening choils, and hate those that are way bigger than they have to be. If you deal with fishing line, twine, or fibrous material, they just tend to snag and annoy the hell out of me. I'd rather have a blade that's a little dull the last 1/8 inch than a line snagging notch that isn't really needed.

Well...I hadn't really thought about it.

Now that I have...

......not an issue for me.

I find such choils handy for notching and even some fine detail work. I've found them handy for quickly girdling wood when I want a secure, no-slip cording notch without having to chop or dig a vee all around a circumference. And it does allow me to sharpen ALL of my blade.

Frankly, I'd never consider it a factor--if I like a knife I buy it.

If you sharpen freehand place your guide fingers over that area and apply slight pressure. This will get it to touch the stone.

Spyderco knives have a continuous curve so there is never a flat section to sharpen. Most who sharpen their own blades are accustom to sharpening a larger flat section of the blade before the belly and this causes exactly what you describe. I also see it a lot on the Spyderco knives sent to me.

I agree. They always snag.
