Opinion forumite(s): Spyderco is about THE industry standard IMHO.
Why?

1.) The clip (they started it)

2.) The hole (THAT too)

3.) The "Spyderedge" (serrations have been around a long time, but Spyderco got it right IMO)

ANY Spydie owner(s) -or- observer(s)
that feel as I do?

AET ;)

4. Variety of models and pricing. Spyderco offers something for just about everybody from dress knives to duty knives. Same as the pricing - you can get a Jester for $20 or spend well over $100 for a custom collaboration.

5. Consistant quality control.

I would agree, I think spyderco is the best all around knife manufacturer. They make knives for all purposes, all price ranges, and everything from grungy to high class. They have all the bases covered, and the customer service and commitment to quality is outstanding. I recommend spydies to anyone who asks me.

I think they certainly deserve applause for their raising the bar on standards for a modern large production knife company. I do think everyone who has more than one decent folder should have at least one spyderco. I have 3 (my wife has my delica), and only my powerful self control keeps me from owning more.

I don't think I would go that far as to say they are the best, but they do make some nice products. :)

Some of them I do like a lot, for ex. Military is my favorite outdoor and around household folder, Delica is my favorite travel knife, Bob Lum Chinese folder and Peter Herbst are my favorite suit-carry knives. Also Bill Moran Featherweight would be my first choice going into real wilderness and Ti-Salsa or Meerkat are my choices when I’m not certain about knife regulations where I’m going to go.
On the other hand they manufacture some knives what I do not like at all and consider as the form domination over the sense, for ex. Gunting, Ayoob, Civilian and some more.

Well, are they the best in the industry? In my opinion they aren’t, there are a lot of equally good knives for comparable price from another manufacturers.
Are they good adequately for required price? Yes indeed, by all means!
This isn’t my idea – the best is the worst enemy of the good, isn’t it?

Quote from Sal Glessar, President of Spyderco, from this Spydie website forum thread;

"In the world of knives, Spyderco has elected to pursue reliable high performance as our niche. One we feel is worthy of the effort extended. In this endless pursuit to “jump higher and run faster”, we have introduced many concepts and materials to the knife industry.

Spyderco was the first company to make a one hander, we introduced clips and put serrations on the map. Spyderco was the first American company to use ATS-34. The fist American company to make a linerlock. The fist to use G-10, carbon fiber, titanium and integral clips. We introduced ATS-55, VG-10 and Powdered metals to the production knife world. The first to make “Snap-Its”, “Remote Release” fastening methods. The first to use a lazer to cut out pictures in a blade. The first to use wire clips, etc. etc.."

IMO, they ARE the BEST out there, due to Spyderco's constant determination at exceeding industry standards. My Spyderco knives have never let me down, and their construction is top notch. Their customer service surpasses any other company that I've dealt with, always placing the customer first. Spyderco makes it a point to listen to their customers.

Proof of that is in the Spyderco forum, both here and the Spyderco website forum, with replies, comments, and requests for ideas by Sal, Carlos, Joyce, etc.. What other knife company is there where the President and his subordinates have such great interaction with the company's customers...actually caring for what they want or would like to see done in the future? I can't seem to recall one....:D

As what A.E.T. stated....."Spyderco; BEST in the industry."

IMHO, they are just that. ;)

BEST is a relative term. Best at what?: Unique designs? Durability? Cutting? Innovation? Customer service? Price to performance ratio? Steels? Selection?

Certainly there are many other companies that could stake a claim for being the best any of these qualities. A lot that depends on individual consumer behavior. However, I'd say Spyderco is certainly ONE OF THE BEST in their category (mid to high end production folders).

They are sentimentally "the best" to Spyderco fanatics who are brand loyal to them and they have the brilliant advantage of having a unique marketing trademark -- the "hole" -- to distinguish their product from many others.

When you buy a Spyderco, I think you are in part buying it's reputation and image too.

I believe the same could be said for alot of the knife companies out there.

I really believe there is no real best company overall.

There ARE specific models from different companies that stand out in different areas though...so the best knife for this task would be.........;)

I agree that Spyderco makes great knives and are true innovators but Strider knives have got them beat hands down. You could smash any Spyderco to pieces with a Strider.

Spyderco makes the best pocket knives known to man, but if you really need to survive or kill, a Strider it far better suited.

Spyderco is probably the one of the biggest companys in the industry, with good reason. But what kinda of knife would you bring with you if you were going on "Survivor"?

They are very good in many areas, but there are ALOT of good production companies.

For instance I really like Buck knives. They are also consistantly inovating with new designs and technology. And they have the best warranty service that I know of in the production knife industry.

Maybe they are the best at their particular niche of kutlery...but overall Best...nope...;)

If I were goin' on "Survivor"?
Why, a SPYDERCO Fred Perrin Bowie ;)
Of course!

AET (ATE on the Spyderco "home" forum;))

I have owned five of their knives over the course of eight years. They make good knives. Their strength is a solid product, variety, and good pr. I like them. Not much innovation in their product line, though. They make production versions endorsed by many customer makers so that helps them. I think they won't be going away anytime soon. :D

The ability to smash a competitors product into pieces does not make for a better knife. You could smash any Strider to pieces with a pickaxe, does this mean that the pickaxe is a better knife? "Smash" is not the image that I get when I think "cutting tool". Do people generally buy knives because they need to "survive or kill" or because they need to cut things?

While Spyderco has an impressive record of "firsts" in the industry, that in no way determines the actual usefulness of a product made today. If you desire to cut something it doesn't matter if the tool you have on hand was the first or the fiftieth to have a hole or clip.

Spyderco makes some nice knives, but the only one I own is a Spydercard. With everything else being more or less equal, I'll take an Axis lock over the methods employed on any current Spyderco. Hopefully their forthcoming ball bearing design will change that.

I've come to realize that there is almost ALWAYS a spydie in my pocket and I wouldn't have it any other way!
Matt
