Hey folks...my usual outdoors utility knife is a griptilian 551S...I'm looking for a good fixed blade for hunting (field dress, skinning, etc.) birds, deer, and elk, but don't wanna gunk up my grip & axis lock with blood and guts...how would the Spyderco Bill Moran drop point work? Seems like a great fixed blade at an even greater price...thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It's a classic. Very comfortable grip. Thinly ground blade is a like a laser beam! Yeah, it's a winner.

Field and Stream picked it as a top knife a few months back. THey hammered it through a stump, and it came out OK.

If I were in the market, it would be at the top of my list.

I have the clip point is what I guess you would call it but it's scary sharp and being of course a Spyderco I'm not too surprised by this. I think I will carry mine tommorow. But I love this knife I got it for about $40 when we cleared them out at the store I work at.

The handle is small and slim which is great if you have small or medium hands. Laser sharp, thin grind. I just sold mine since I have way too many knives anyway but it is highly recommended :)

I use to EDC one as a neck knife, and it is a fantastic knife! It will do anything you need in the way of a cutting hunting knife:thumbup:.

It's between that and the Benchmade Rant Bowie Drop Point...Bill Moran's a little more pricey, but a shorter blade than the Rant...we'll see! Thanks for all of your input!

For the same price range, how does the Ontario RAT-3 stack up? FOr $78 I can get it in D2

I would stick with the Moran . I have more faith in Spyderco than Ontario cutlery . I have one , superb ergonomics .

The RAT-3 will be thicker, if you want to pry or baton with your knife then that would be the better one.
For skinning and such the Bill Moran is probably one of the best knives you could possibly get.
VG-10 is also one of the better stainless steel types on the market, most of the time it's compared with S30V for edge holding, right around the same range as D-2.
