Looking at Spydercos, I loved the Native FRN once I got it in-hand, and the lockback was the smoothest I ever operated. As a bit of an upgrade, I was looking at the Native5 for the FFG, but I've heard much more buzz about the Sage series here in regard to it's high quality. Since the size is pretty much identical and the price isn't too dissimilar, it really comes down to the lock, namely the Bolt-Action lock.

I'm an AXIS fan, and I like the ball-bearing lock on a Manix okay, though the one I tried was stiff and had less travel than I like. Since the handles I've seen it on the Manix are translucent, it was easy to get an idea of how it works. The Bolt-Action, on the other hand, I have no idea about in regards to operation, and was wondering if anyone had any insight, as well as experience with using or maintaining the lock.

The Blackie Collins Bolt Action lock used on the Sage 3 functions in a manner very similar to the caged ball lock on the Manix 2, although it would be more accurate to say the CBL is similar to the BA, since Blackie's design is several decades older. Both use a coil spring system that requires more force to overcome than the omega springs of the axis lock. Personally, I have no trouble releasing the CBL and BA locks with just my thumb, but others have complained that it was impossible. The Sage 3 can easily be flicked open with a little wrist snap if that is your thing, and it utilizes a steel carrier for the bolt, making it stronger and probably longer lasting than the original Gerber (mine is still going strong after 25 years). The only maintenance it should need is an occasional wash and a drop of oil.

The Ball Bearing Lock wears in and becomes more comfortable over time.
As for the Bolt Action Lock, it's extremely smooth, whether you be using one or two hands. Two hands is probably easier but I've always used one hand mostly.
As far as maintenance - like said by Yab, the most it should need is a drop of oil from time to time as that will kind of clear it out. The Sage 3 will serve you well for several years, if not forever.
The BA lock on the Sage 3 is not as stiff as the CBL on the Manix 2. You should have no problems.

I say get one. It's a great knife and I wish I still had mine. =]
