Spyderco Bushcraft Question

I am looking at the Spyderco Bushcrafter for a nice scandi carver. I am very finicky about handles, and comfort is almost everything to me. I've seen so many owners of this blade rave about the comfortable handle and heat treat, so I thought this one may be for me.

However, the first image I pull up is one where the tang has broken in half, apparently due to the skeletonized tang. I do some light battoning from time to time to help get my fires going, so I don't want a full tang knife that I'm afraid to use.

Any owners of this knife here that have put it through it's paces? If so, how has it held up for you?

If it's comfortable but won't hold up, then it's not worth purchasing...

Thanks in advance!

I have one but I've never put it thru it's paces.

I like it but because the whole knife is a little bigger than I like - mine hasn't got used much.

I like something a bit more compact.

Spyderco bushcrafter is my main user for about a year. Wood processing/occasional batoning worked fine.
On the other hand, I never broke a knife yet. Firm believer in 'the right tool for the job'.
I don't think this knife will disappoint.

I have beat mine pretty well. I have one of the ones with nice wood. It has the most comfy handle I have ever used. You should have no problems with this one. I also have a Skookum bush tool, and I love that knife. I do tend to reach for my Spyderco more then the Skookum, and thats the best praise I can give for that knife.

yes, it can handle batonning just fine (although i don't try to split wood more than 3" thick). i actually just took pics of mine for another forum/thread...as you can see mine is definitely a user - it's my most used knife actually.

this is my fallkniven s1 but i use the same wedge technique with the bushcraft when splitting wood.

i'm the same way, handle ergonomics almost trumps everything else...i think you'll be happy with the spyderco.

I believe I read somewhere that Spyderco removed the hole in the tang closest to the edge after the first run knife you mentioned broke during batoning. You could probably find it in their subforum.

Personally, I sold mine a while back........and I still regret it today. It had one of the nicest handles for sure!

Thanks for all the responses and insights on this blade. I'm really leaning toward getting one. And thanks for the great pics JV3!

I've done a bunch of searching over in the Spyderco subforum and read a lot of threads on the Bushcraft. I couldn't seem to find anything that references a change to the skeletonized tang construction. Anyone have more info on this?

LOL, I saw the response, didn't even look at who started the thread.

Have you read and confirmed that the specs on the handles are the same between the wood and G10 versions? I have the wood version and love it. In the pic above the G10 slabs look to be a little thicker.

I'm curious about this as well. Anyone know the answer?????

Two years of almost everyday use; battoning, carving, kitchen, everyday utility, you name it and I do it with this knife. It's on me every second of every day. I've purchased tons of other knives to test out but I keep using my SB because of It's handle comfort, handy utility size, carving confidence inspiring weight, and ability to take and keep a razor sharp edge.

I bought one of the 'seconds' direct from Spyderco. I repaired the handle cracks with epoxy and refinished it with MinWax. It has been a solid performer for me. The handle is still the most comfortable design I have seen.

Just throwing an option out there, as I am picky about handles too.
I am thinking of getting an enzo trapper kit and making my own handles to fit me.
