Bought this knife a week ago. $24 at the local knife shop. Been my edc all week. Somewhat difficult to open one handed, but this knife is very solid. I purchased it purely as a beater. I scrape bolts and nuts with it, use the end to hammer, and have even chopped a couple branches with it. Blade is very thick. It doesnt feel very sharp, but it slices through cardboard fairly easily. Edge retention is fair. Edge is still fairly original, so I think it will get better with use and a lot of sharpening. Good deal for the money. Looks nice. Wont be a big deal if I lose it. Lockback with tip down carry. Micarta prevents modification for tip up carry. More comfortable to carry than my old ti lite. After about a week of use it opens easily with the spyder hole. Lock up is very tight. Holds up well to prying and hammering with the spine. Very satisfied with this purchase.

Have you lubed it....? There you go.
If that doesn't solve the problem for at least a couple months I don't know what will.

Good deal, but not really Spyderco, it's imported.

By tight lockup I mean in the positive manner. Theres no blade play, lock feels nice and solid. And I did my research before buying them. They are made in china and imported here by spyderco. In fact, it doesnt say spyderco anywhere on the knife. Just AUS6 Byrd.

That would be the one. According to Sal they had problems with the quality of this model which they call the "Harrier" so they are looking for a new manufacturer. The ones that got through quality control are good but apparantely there were too many rejected.

The the new shape "hole" I didn't have any problems with it but I do have hands on the smaller size.

Re whether It is a "Spyderco" or not is a matter of conjecture. It doesn't have Spyderco on it but I believe the "Byrd" trademark belongs to Spyderco. It is designed by Spyderco made for Spyderco and distributed and sold by Spyderco. Yes! It's imported but so is the Delica. Given the quality control of Spyderco IMO it is Spyderco's entry level knife and I have seen "Spydercos" with worse fit and finish then knives in the Byrd range.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of that one, it isn't on the Spyderco webpage and I was threw by the Micarta+AUS6 steel. Nice looking blade in any case.

Cliff, I dont think the new spyderco hole serves much purpose other than decoration, I only use the circular part of the hole while opening it. Thats the exact knife I have but min is plain edge. The edge seems rather sturdy, it has replaced my ti lite as an edc. Only thing I dont like about it is the weight. 154 grams.

Yeah I prefer the FRN ones for weight. The Pacific Salt I have has a little play, up and down and sideways, the blade doesn't engage the tang square and other issues, but even then I would carry it over the stainless models as outside of using it as a fist load, the lighter one is simply more versatile, can clip it on looser clothing plus the weight really isn't productive on a folder like it can be on a fixed blade so if you can go lighter why not. The micarta/steel ones do look dressier though.
