Spyderco C105GP2 Persian 2

I returned my old Persian w/ bolsters to Spyderco a few years ago due to the stiffness in opening. I had cleaned and oiled the pivot, opened well over 1000 times and still was not pleased with how it operated. The new Persian 2 looks like the blade can be removed but the scales are pinned. The tension I believe comes from the lockback design of this knife. Has the Persian 2 shown any improvement in this area or is it just typical of Ed Schempp's design?
I really liked the design but not how tight the operation of the blade is to open.
Thanks for any info before I lay out the funds to purchase. No one in my area has one to examine.

I have handled with an old persian, and seems like it is the only knife that opens up in a very stiff manner. It can't be taken apart, so i'm not sure if the persian even has a washer. I believe persian 2 is smoother and the tension can be adjusted by the pivot screw. But i have never handled with one, so don't take my words on the persian2 too seriously.

It's not an Ed Shempp design that does this, all back/mid lock knives have much better detent than most other types of locks. The constant tension the lockbar is under is transfered to the rounded base of the tack near the lock tab. Do you have any other back lock knives to compare to?

Quite a few. Beretta/Jess Horn, David Boye, Camillus, Tak Fukuta, Spyderco Caly3 CFP, Gerber, Puma, Spyderco Delica, and a few custom to name a few. None of these were as difficult to open as the Persian. Using the Spyderco hole on this one was a real pain. That's why I though the Ed Shempp lockback could be a harder then most. I had read and was told by Spyderco that it was one of their harder ones to open. Was hoping the new version of the persian was not as tight as others I have by Spyderco. If the new Persian is twice as stiff as my Caly 3 that would be better then the first Persian. Never had a problem with any lockback before.

Can't speak for the C105GP2, as I don't have one. Will say that the C83GP2, while slightly less tight than the original C83 and C105 and the C83GRD Sprint, is still tighter than almost all other Spyderco midlocks I own. Ed has commented in the past that he likes them that way, so I'm inclined to think the C105GP2 will be that way as well.

I really liked the design of the original Persian but I sold mine for that very reason. No matter how much I oiled it or how many times I opened and closed it, it still was so stiff that it practically cut my thumb opening it. I think the new one will be better in that regard, but I liked the look of the bolstered micarta over the plain G10. Oh well, it's not as if I really need another knife anyway.

I too like the design of the original Persian although the micarta was a bit smooth. I guess for me I would really enjoy one with a different locking system. This would fit into my EDC rotation nicely. I also don't need another knife. Well maybe I do since I have not reached 100 yet. That's knives not years of age. The size was good for a EDC in my opinion. I did feel bad sending it back to Spyderco and they were great to deal with. I ended up with an exchange for a Para Military D2 as this was another knife that I needed. I will keep looking for a knife that can replace the original Persian. If it was not pinned I would purchase it and do a little mod to it to lessen the pressure of opening this model. Maybe I still will since the blade looks like it can be removed.

the new one is MUCH easier to open, easy to do with just a flick of the thumb. It is one of my new favs. Loved the old one, esp the looks, but as many have stated, it was a bit stiff, 20% heavier, bit thicker handle, and it didnt slice half as well. That and the handle wont get scratched up :) Its a true winner in my little book.

Thanks for your reply. To bad you don't have one in you knives for sale. Seems like you have had both so that means that you can give a fair comparison. I do like the design and now am closer to springing for the knife. Thanks again for your info.

Well I hit the Order button on Sunday and the new Persian came today. It is much easier to open then the Original Schempp. I placed the order with Howes Knife Shop. Best price and the service was A1. I had mentioned to him the problem that I had with the original and he was more the helpful in filling my request. His site showed how many were in stock and I requested that he check for the one that was the easiest to open. I am sure that only a few places would do this. Here is his response to my request.
Ron,
I picked out the one I would have chosen for myself....one hand opening pretty smooth, blade falling dead center.
I am more than happy to check on some of the inventory when someone orders a knife. That is surely what I would like someone to do if I was ordering, so ask anytime.

Tracking number has been sent, knife is on the way.

Thank you,
Jim
Well the blade is dead center and opens better then then I expected.
All and all I am pleased with the purchase.
Thanks for all the responses to this thread.
Ron
