Hi,folks.I would like to ask for a little help here.

Recently I bought a C158 from an online store.According to the info dealers provided, the blade steel should be CTS-XHP;however I found it is actually in CPM-S30V, despite the warranty paper said blade steel is CTS-XHP.

I thought there could be 2 versions of C158, one comes with XHP and another S30V,the dealers might send me the wrong one, so I did a little searching on the internet.
To my surprise, all online stores list only C158 with XHP,and according to Spyderco official website,C158 comes only with S30V

Frankly speaking,I don't think XHP would out perform S30V significantly, and I won't care that much about the blade steel,as long as Spyderco does HT properly.

But this is really... weird, I am just curious about what happened to C158:confused:. Anyone knows something please share.:D

With some quick Google fu I found statements purportedly from Kristi with Spyderco stating that the S30V Techno's were an accidental run. Future Techno's produced in the fall of 2015 will be XHP again. You can contact Spydercos warranty and repair to exchange your S30V model for XHP if desired, if stock permits.

I have no experience with CTS-XHP but have read reports that the two steels are "similar". I think I'd keep it, may be rare someday.

Thank you for the info and advice:thumbup:. I have a C186 TIP in XHP already; besides, sending my C158 to Spyderco for replacement isn't that convenient. I am happy with this S30V one.

I even saw some threads stating the performace of XHP falls between S30V and 154CM, HT issue, I suppose.

Did a little dig in BF and found some previous threads on this topic.

Looks like at first Spyderco claimed it was a minor "mistake" to make S30V C158, just a short run, and they will switch back to XHP in time. Now on the website they claim S30V C158 will be in batches...no sign of XHP yet...Someone consider it an outrage switching from "exotic" CTS-XHP to "low end" S30V.Personally, I am confident with my S30V one, Spyderco seems pretty experienced in doing S30V HT.

Never ceases to amaze me how people freak out over different steels when they will likely never be able to tell the difference.

XHP is newer to market but I haven't seen anything ti tell me its appreciably better than s30v.

S30v, elmax, s35vn, CPM d2, XHP, cpm 154 are all excellent middle of the road, powder metallurgy steels. To see people freak because someone chose one over the other is hilarious to me.

I've had my Manix 2 in CTS-XHP for a year now, and my PM2 in S30V for year as well. I've had bad luck with all the S30V knives I've owned, which is why the PM2 is my only knife with it now.

The Manix has seen at least twice the use of the PM2 (in actual cutting and carry time) and it has not rolled, it has not chipped, and it is still sharp as hell. Just finally touched it up on the sharpmaker ultra fine stones Monday night. The PM2 chips so much its what forced me to learn to sharpen, and has taught me to do it on the sharpmaker and freehand. Not big chips, but deep enough and enough of them to make it catch and act like micro serrations.

XHP is my favorite steel. In my experience, and with the steels I've owned long term, it falls here in edge retention:

CPM-M4
ZDP-189
CTS-XHP
Elmax
CPM-S35VN
D2
CPM-S30V

I find XHP to be similar to Elmax myself, if slightly above. As I try out more steels and more XHP knives, we shall see.

Personally, I would use your XHP Techno and keep the S30V one in the safe as a "novelty" to maybe sell down the road.

From the February 2015 Spyderco Byte released today:

"C158TIP TECHNO FOLDER FEATURES A TEMPORARY BLADE STEEL CHANGE

Have you always wanted a postage stamp printed upside down? Here’s your opportunity.

The C158TIP Techno is Spyderco / Marcin Slysz collaboration. When released, the blade steel for the model was Carpenter Steel’s CTS® XHP.

“Pobody’s Nerfect” - we goofed!

A single production run released this month has a Crucible CPM® S30V blade steel. Carpenter CTS XHP and Crucible CPM S30V are both steels produced here in the United States with the highest rating for cutting performance, edge retention and rust resistance. Once the run of “Oops Technos” are gone the model will return this autumn back to its original CTS XHP blade steel. The CPM S30V Techno is shipping now with no change in pricing from the CTS XHP version. MSRP: $319.95"

Sarcasm, I suppose. :D

Could you shoot me a PM or email where you bought this Techno? I'm trying to track one down. Thanks!

Buy direct from Spyderco. It was a mistake run and all some right now will be s30v until they run out. It will be rare as it was a mistake.
