Good evening all

I just ordered the Spyderco Caly 3.5 Carbon Fiber ZDP-189 Plain Edge Knife from Amazon. I have been wanting this knife for my rotation and collection for a long time now. My only question to you all is how hard is it to sharpen the ZDP-189. I use the edge pro Apex.

Thanks a lot Roger

It may take a little longer, depending on how long you let the edge go between sharpening. I find that on steel such as ZDP, it's better to maintain the edge and not let it get too dull. I made this mistake with my delica in ZDP, it just took longer to get the edge back

Thanks a lot for the information. I pretty much assumed that would be the answer and I do plan on keeping the edge sharp and not letting it get bad.

I've never used an apex pro, but I've had absolutely no problems freehand sharpening on water stones with zdp. It's actually easier than some other commonly used knife metals, takes an incredible edge real easy and relatively quick, especially on these thin edged ffg spydercos. If you're able to sharpen other knives I don't think you'll have any problems here at all. I keep my ZDPs pretty sharp, usually a few strokes on the strop is all it takes to get them back to hair whittling even after a full day of box cutting, I rarely have to actually take mine to stones

The stones you have available will determine the end result. But you should have no problem with the OEM Edge Pro Stones and the knife you refer to.
