Hey guys I purchased a Caly 3 CF and out of box the blade is not centered, the action of the knife is extremely rough, after about 4-5 times opening I literally cannot open the blade without two hands due to it being so rough. Also, im not sure if this is just the way this model is or not but the blade tip is every so slightly exposed when closed. My question is, is this under warranty and should I send it in or is it something I should be able to do by taking the knife apart (something I dont feel I should have to do out of box with a knife at this price point).

Blade tip exposed??? Send it back! Sounds like a QC issue and I'm pretty certain Spyderco will make it right for you. My Caly 3.5 CF is very smooth opening with centered blade, etc. If you take it apart you will be voiding the warranty and limiting your options going forward.

Thanks thats why I havent touched it.

My caly 3 is super smooth and centered even after being carried solo for over a year. Must be a dud somehow, like the others said I'd send her in.

My CF Caly 3 had the same problem with the rough stiff opening blade. I chose to deal with it myself by removing the blade, cleaning and smoothing in the pivot area, and then trying several lubes until I discovered Gun Butter. The knife is now very smooth and probably my favorite edc. The Exposed tip is probably a bigger problem and would definitely be grounds to return the knife or make a warranty claim.

It may be easier to do an exchange where you bought it than to deal with Spyderco W&R. Spyderco does a great job of making things right with customers, but I have found communication with them can sometimes be difficult. One other thing to consider is that this knife is now discontinued and if Spyderco cannot fix yours and they have no replacements, then the only other thing they can do is send you the knife back or offer store credit. So again, an exchange may be the easiest option.

I waited too long to exchange the knife with the dealer I bought it from and its now past the exchange/return period. I understand it is discontinued thats actually why I wasnt sure what to do. I guess ill have to send it in though.

The exposed tip is reason enough to send it in but with the knife being discontinued you may not be able to exchange it. If you can exchange it at the dealer you got it from you may have better chances if they have one in stock. Calling Spyderco and finding out is your best bet.

I once sent a knife back to Spyderco which had a problem. It was a Sprint run and could not be replaced so instead they gave me full retail credit towards anything in their current catalog.
