Spyderco Calypso Jr. concern

Just got a Spydie Calypso Jr. that I ordered as a gift for a friend at work. Folding action seems smooth but if you open it slowly (not flicking it open) the action feels, not gritty, but rough. I looked closely at the pivot area and I couldn't see any washers or even a gap that would indicate washers. I don't want to send it back if this is a non-issue so I'm asking, is this normal for this particular model? I own Benchmades and they all feel silky smooth when opening.

No washers in mine, still smooth. Blow out the crap in there with compressed air or something

One I got was like that, I cleaned the pivot area with a brush and soap and water, rinsed well and oiled, and it was much better.

Mine still _sounds_ a little gritty when I open it close to my ear, but I _feel_ no grittyness or resistance at all. It's a steel blade with plastic handles and no metal liners, I don't think it would ever be perfectly quiet.

Clean it first, there might be dust or particles in it. If it isn't better, call up spyderco and see what they say.

The Caly is a bargain, and it functions well, but I wouldn't expect it to be as smooth as a 100.00 folder with aluminum or Ti handles.

P.S. A second calyJr I got was smooth out of the box.

Thanks everyone, it's reassuring to know. We're all fortunate to have this forum and it's members!

basjoo, the subject of gritty FRN models has come out before. Here's what you can do:

wash the knife with some HOT soapy water, rinse, then dry it out or blast out the moisture with compressed or dry it with a hair dryer. The knife should be real smooth after that. For ADDED smoothness, I sometimes drop a teenie weenie droplet of militec-1 (especially when the knife is HOT) - it will be SUPER smooth after that.

Let us know if it works.

Agree, it's not entirely uncommon for the action on a zytel folder to feel a little tight and rough. It smooths up significantly in use, usually pretty quickly. Cleaning and lubing will make a big difference right off the bat.

...and the washers are so thin, you will see them only if you disassemble the knife.

My Calypso, Jr. came smooth. I have a Delica, however, that came fairly tight and had a distinct rough spot. It was easy to see why -- there was a small portion of the tang that was not polished, and it gave it a rough feeling as it was dragged past the lock bar. It has since worn down some and is acceptably smooth. The action also became less tight with use.

What model Benchmades do you have? If you have Axis locked knives then the difference will be even more extreme in my opinion. All of my Axis knives are super smooth. Even my best, and I'll concede that it is not a custom, back lock knife is no match for smoothness when compared to an Axis.
