I took the advice of several forum members and got a grey calypso jr. It is a very nice little knife, very tight lock up but very easy to open. As far as the edge, it is BY FAR the sharpest knife I have ever seen right out of the box. I mean, its so sharp it scares me!

Although I am a Himalayan Imports nut, this definately won't be my last spyderco (I'm also a big fan of the sharpmaker, which has saved many a dull knife from my inept hands)

If you like that one, you should try to find a Micarta version. It is my favorite knife I ever carried. The AUS-8 performs great and the Micarta offers a touch of class...Ed.

The micarta version is discontinued (I think), but you can still find them around. Very classy looking. It's no secret that the Calypso Jr is my favorite Spyderco of all time, just a pleasure to use.

The micarta version isn't vg10 is it? I don't know much about steels, but that FRN calypso with vg10 is hideously sharp.

My old, black FRN Calypso Jr. still sees a lot of use. It's really beat up now though. I may have to try and get one of the newer grey ones.

The Micarta Calypsos have been discontinued for many moons. The large Micarta Calypso used VG-10, but the small ones used AUS-8.

The plain edge Micarta Calypso Jr. very rarely comes up for sale these days.

The micarta version is 8A, not VG-10. 8A, like VG-10, has vanadium in the mix, which is one of the factors in the blade feeling so sharp. The main factor is the super thin edge, and both versions have that.

Yeah Joe Talmadge you and I are definitely on the same page with AUS-8 steel. I have several Spydercos with that blade steel and I won't part with any of them. Also there is one other blade steel that I thought was great but it never got any fan fare. ATS-55 in my book was ( and still is) a very dependable blade steel. My Dyad has it and it is one of my top 5 knives of all time. Now I won't digress about the Calypso Jr. I just got one of those Gray ones myself in VG-10 and it is a wonderful little knife. I will go a step further with your suggestion. I want one of those with a GRAY Micarta handle and S30V blade steel. But don't change the nice Spydie clip that is already on it. The black silhouette of Spydie on bead blasted stainless would even make Vincent Van Gogh green with envy. ;) :)
