Spyderco Cat Problems

Today I received my first Spyderco in the mail from BladeHQ, a Spyderco Cat G-10. http://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Cat-G-10-Folding-Knife--9118

Excitedly, I opened the package, and noticed right away that the packaging was all beat up, and when I took the knife out, there were greasy fingerprints on it. I decided not to think much of it, and opened the knife, and it felt great!
It was time for a cutting test, and disappointingly, the knife had a really hard time cutting paper. After trying to cut the packaging, I noticed it hardly cut anything at all. "Maybe its just hard material to cut" I thought, so I grabbed my Kershaw Brawler, and it cut everything, the paper and packaging like butter.

Upon close inspection of the knife, the grind seemed to be really inconsistant where it started nicely, and then got narrow towards the tip, and then wide again.

Is it suppose to be like that? Am I just crazy and had too high expectations?

Please help me :(

I'd say it's hit or miss with new knives. Some come sharper than others but it doesn't really matter much to me because

I'd reprofile and sharpen it within a few days of getting it anyway.

Honestly the actual grind does not seem that bad. I would not say it is normal, but also very possible to come from the factory like that. The fact that it was not razor sharp out of the box is what I think is strange. I have owned quite a few Spyderco's and have never gotten one that was not razor sharp.

I would suggest returning it and swapping for another if you are not happy with what you received.

You probably got a knife that was returned for the very reasons you are dissatisfied with it. Either return for exchange or reprofile and resharpen it yourself. I seldom get a knife that's sharp enough for me right out of the box, even Spydercos.

My Cat came with a bit of blade play that got worse almost immediately. I sent it to Spyderco and it was replaced with a new one that is pretty much perfect. I do recall both of the Cats were a little less sharp than other Spydercos I've bought.

My Cat is one of the best finished knives in my collection, even over some many times the price. It is tight, Syderco sharp right out of the box, and someone took extra time to smooth the edges. It really is perfect.

I suspect that someone bought this knife and returned it after sharpening and monkeying around with it. It also could have been a knife someone used and then slipped back in the box unbeknownst to the management. I used to be around a wholesaler and these things happen. I'd return it, or send it to Spyderco for evaluation and replacement.

I convexed the edge on mine, and it's a great little slicer. I once found it still clipped on to the pocket of my cargo shorts after it had gone through the wash and dryer. It was really clean afterwards, a little lube in the pivot, and it's good to go.

That would be really bad business if they just sold it for new again imho.

Do not be surprised. I was not going to say anything, but since it came up I will. The OP mentioned he bought this from BladeHQ. I very recently bought a Griptilian from them that had QC issues and wanted to return it. I carried the knife for one day before noticing anything wrong. After communication failure on their end through email I called in and was told since I carried it they would not accept the return since they could not re-sell the item. I was pissed and said thank you and hung up. I got to thinking....... They know I was wanting to return it because of QC issues and told me they would not accept it because they could not re-sell it? Now i'm thinking they would actually re-sell a item they know has QC issues. Is that what I got in the first place? I had to call back and spoke with a supervisor. I expressed my concern and explained what I was told. He said when they receive items in return they will have their (in house) guy inspect them. If they are determined to be good then they go back up for sale. If they are determined defective then they send them back to the factory and have them go through the companies warranty service and then sell them (as new). Now even if this is true I find this concerning as well as they are selling items sent back to the factory for QC issues as new once they return. This would be refurbished in my opinion. They are also selling returned items as new after their (in house) guy checks them. Who knows how many he has to check and how through the process is. I'm guessing not very. The supervisor would nervously laugh every time I expressed concern about selling returned items.
