Spyderco Catcherman - Underrated for Defense?

I was going through some stuff and found the Catcherman. Began to wonder that this might actually be a great defensive blade. I know it's a fishing knife but the blade is long and wicked. For those that like big folders this one fits the bill. The blade shape is perfect for long slashes. The point is very sharp and makes for effortless penetration on soft materials. Yes, the blade is thin but it seems more than strong enough for the job excepting if you need to twist and turn through body armor. Mine has the yellow handle and looks like a small banana - but once the blade is out WOW!

I have often thought the same thing. Its fairly thin in your hand and pocket as well. Maybe I should get one soon in case they are ever discontinued. Its also probably great for cleaning fish. :-)

The catcherman's blade is supposedly thin and flexible, great for the fishies, but highly questionable for defense.
Just the same i'd rather have an Endura - which is what i'm buying, not really for "defense" purposes, but I want a ~4" Spydie, and the Endura fits the bill rather well.

I always liked the pics of the Catcherman, then after handing a few, decided this knife should not be part of Spyderco's product line. It's flimsy and sinewy, and *so* specifically a fish knife, that it's impractical. I don't think it would be comfortable to wear, and it's to clumsy to be used for defense. Just my .02. And you know I love Spyderco, truly. They are and always will be my favorites.

Try the Spyderco Massad Ayoob. It's the same basic idea (thin, great for slashing, etc.) taken to a whole new level. It's my favorite Spyderco, and one of my best knife acquisitions EVER.

I read in "Tactical Knives", or somewhere, that they though it would make a fine defense piece. I always thought it would not be so great. Anything in an emergency though.

Well maybe the idea is not practical, but a fillet knife flexible or not, is the one knife I hope I am never up against. They slice like crazy and stab too. They rarely snap.
