Hey all,
I am thinking about getting the new Spyderco cbn stone. I was going to get Ultra Sharp, but for really IMO, the Cbn stone really isn't all that expensive, because you get two plates in one. Just curious if anyone could chime in who has it and tell about the quality of the plate. Meaning how good the Cbn particles are adhered to the plate, and if they actually cover the entire plate, and don't have bald patches etc. Being made in China doesn't bother me as long as it's good quality, I have plenty of stuff made in China that's good and plenty of stuff that isn't, same with made in USA stuff. One side is 400 and the others is 800, so is it rated in mesh/JIS? Is so how do they compare to dmt the way the leave scratch patterns?

Thank you,

Mike

I think you're onto something with this money-saving idea.

I had actually forgotten that I had one of these. I preordered it the minute I heard about it, but when it arrived, I saw that it was a plate, instead of a stone, as I expected, and put it aside in disappointment. I had an anti-plate bias then. Since, though, I've gotten seriously involved with plates, for serious razor rehab, so I pulled this one out. I did sharpen an M390 Delica on it, but it's not worth going into that much; the plate was not broken in, so of course it had a super-aggressive character that will settle back into its final form with some use. I do have a really lethally sharp, bitey M390 Delica now, though, after some stropping. Cardboard boxes, beware!

What I can say is that this seems like a really, really good plate. The idea of it having a bald patch is almost laughable, it is so dense with abrasives.

Can't speak to scratch patterns, because all I saw was the incredibly aggressive scratch patterns of the un-broken-in plate, and I have no DMTs to compare in any case, only Atoma and higher-grit Ultrasharp. But that's enough comparison to make me give this plate a big thumbs up. Looking forward to exploring it further.
