I'm considering purchasing a Spyderco ceramic bench stone and was wondering what is the cutting material within the matrix? Is it AO or SiC,ect..
Do they work well? Thanks DM

I just love them, the UF is awesome for finishing touches and gets your edge to a mirror polish.

Buy 'em all. You'll never look back. Now that I have them, I wonder how I ever managed without them.

Just beware that they come packaged in a blister and the stone is not protected inside its plastic box. If the package gets banged up in the mail, the stone will break through the blister and most likely crack. Buy them from a reputable seller and ask them to properly wrap them before shipping.

Lorenzo,Thanks.I just purchased one from woodcraft.com .Do they package it in that manner as well? I hoped it would be enclosed in its plastic box.DM

I guess they package it in the transparent blister with the stone exposed because they want people to actually see it when on display. I think Spyderco should have a different packaging for online retailers, I had to exchange two of these in the past because they were exposed and got damaged. Maybe they could just make the plastic box transparent too...

I don't have the bench stones, but the pro-files and slip stone I have (same material) are awesome. combine them with a strop and you can get a really good edge on just about anything :)

Lorenzo,I e-mailed them that if it was packaged as you stated to open the blister pack and put it in the plastic box then ship it.So, I'll see how they did it in a few days. Also, they have a good return policy should I notice any damage as you did.DM

Be sure to let us know how you like them.

I have all three grades of the Spyderco bench stones.

Advantages:
Stay flat and do not wear
Can be used dry and later cleaned with Barkeepers Friend and Scotchbrite Pad.

Disadvantages:
Cut very slowly
Take forever (cut slowly)

If you use a diamond or waterstone to get the initial profile, the Spyderco ceramics are great for normal maintenance touch ups.

Regards,
FK

They're supposed to cut slow, its for a final edge.Mine came in the blister pack undamaged. It looks good and flat to within .001" and very fine.I'll see how it preforms.DM

I have all three and love them to pieces. I agree that you should to all of the initial sharpening with diamond stones, then finish with the ceramic. Gives terrifying results. :)

This stone cuts S60V easily. Then stropping takes it to a higher level.Which is why I got it.So,I'm pleased w/ my purchased. The preliminary analysis is that I can get blade steels sharper w/ this ceramic stone.DM

The ultra-fine Spyderco 302 stone is especially superb. Actually I wouldn't trade or sell any of my Spyderco sharpening stones. The only Spyderco stones I like better than the 302 Benchstones are the 701 Profiles because I do a lot with Spyderedges and the Profiles are my savior for sharpening in the away from home. Not to mention that they do a great job on Hawkbills.

The one brother suggested to do rough reprofiling with either a coarse or Xtra coarse diamond stone before doing your final finishing with the 302 stones. I couldn't agree more.

I do hope that someday Spyderco will come out with a clamp-on blade holder similar to the one Razor Edge Systems has for use with Benchstones. I'm fairly good freehanded but those guides do a perfect job.
