I bought a large Spyderco chef's knife went it was discontinued several years ago. It's been in my knife cabinet since then. Well yesterday I got it out and tried it for the first time. It is absolutely unbeleievable! The onion I was chopping seemed to fall apart from fear before I even touched it. I own well over a hundred Spydies so I'm used to sharp but this thing cuts like a laser. Anyway I'd like to get a little more information on the knife if possible. It's a french chef style with a forged blade of about ten inches with full bolsters. The handle looks like micarta. My recollection is a little fuzzy, but I think it was discontinued because the price was fairly high---well over $100 I think. It is worth whatver the asking price was in my opinion. I'd like to know the steel, the original list price and the possibility of bringing it or something similar back into the lineup.

Thanks!

Hi Phantom,

I just checked my copy of the Spyderco story. (A great book by
the way)
By your description you have a KX02, Kitchen experimental II.
The book says that the blade steel is AUS-10 and the handles are
ebony attached with stainless pins. This was the first knife by
Spyderco to use AUS-10, I don't know if they have used it for any
others.

I don't know what the original list was, but I think it was over
$100.00.

I did see a cool modification done to this knife a couple of weeks
ago. Spyderco had a seconds sale up at the factory and Sal had one
that someone had ground into a santoku shape. Looked pretty nice.

Hope that this information helped.

I have one - it is a terrific kitchen knife.

I wish they were able to continue making them.

You should look into the new Al Mar kitchen knives - they are similar. I also like the Kershaw Kai knives - similar blade designs with pretty nice handles.

Thanks Bruceter! Hey Architect, have you seen the Kershaw damascus kitchen knives? I've only seen pics but they look great and the price is sure right for damascus. I've got a couple of the Kai stainless with the powered bamboo handles on order. They were too cheap not to try. If I like them, I'm going to have to try one of the damascus models.
