Hey folks, was thinking about buying a Chinook3 and was wondering what everyone who has or had one thinks of it? Is it a good knife or should i look at something else. wanted for EDC and general to heavy use. Thanks for your time.....

I had 1 for about a year. I used quite often but didnt use it for much for

medium or heavy use.....like it was designed to be used for. It's a big knife

like the Manix. It wieghts in at about 5.8 ozs so its on the heavy side.

I like big knives so the size and weight didnt bother me. I didnt use it enough

and traded it for some work I had to have done on my truck.

I always have one in my pocket. It's a solid and beefy knife that I'd say can shrug off serious work. The chinook's lock is reportedly one of the strongest that spyderco makes. I like the ergos of the narrow but thick handle with guards at both ends protecting your hand from slipping of the handle.

Oh, and I like it so much, I bought 2 more as backup in case it's discontinued.

Yeah, if you like the shape and size of it, I'm sure you'll be really happy with it. It's a good knife, that's for sure.

Earlier this week, on a whim I ordered 3 Spydies. The Chinook 3 being one of them. I'd never seen or handled one of these in person before it arrived today, and I must say, it's a pretty darn nice knife. Well built and initial impressions are positive. I plan in EDCing this thing from here out and see how it goes. It's a quality built knife, and mine has a very smooth action right out of the box.

It's a great knife.
My dad got mine by winning the last Peche Island giveaway, and I find myself thinking of getting another one from time to time.
It sure beats the SnG for being a "Hard Use" knife, I can say that for sure.:)
Great knife and a great value.

It´s a great knife but the "threatening looks" of it makes it a "poor" EDC IMO. There are plenty of knife haters all arround the globe. I really think you should use whatever blade you fancy but it can be consequences... For me it´s to heavy for EDC but what a great knife it is...
Just my $0,02

The "threatening looks" is one of the many attributes I appreciate about a design which is both SD and utilitarian. James and Spyderco have done a great job with this knife. It has a well deserved cult following and a respectable tenure.

My advice: Never let sheep choose your knives to defend against the wolves.

The Chinook 3 is as beautiful as it's powerful.
It's like an hightech Sharpfinger in your hand.
The belly, the sharp point, the strong lock...
The weight and the feel.
It's very addictive.

I don't have many knives over all, compared to many on the forums but I believe this is my most expensive folder to date, and I'm in love with it. Had it about a year now and I just can't bring myself to leave it back, it's my EDC forsure. I pair it up with a SAK for the tasks that need to be done in the office, otherwise I love the look and feel of this knife. Trying to think of something I'd change on it and can't at the moment. It's the sharpest factory edge I've ever received, locks as tight as the day I got it, I think you'd be happy with the purchase, I've been meaing to get a backup myself incase I were to ever lose mine, doubt i'd need the backup due to wearing it out.

You can see the wide grind at the edge making it an exceptionnal cutter.

Love the pics makes me want to rob a store to buy one, lol. But just ordered a Stretch CF zdp189, the Chinook is next though....

Also what do you guys think of the Gayle Bradley?????
It's a fair bit lighter (~ 5 oz) than the Chinook but still fairly heavy-duty. I like the handle on it more than the Chinook but the Chinook stops the hand from sliding up or down better.

The blade is superb - one of the best slicers I have (incl. the Caly 3, Stretch ZDP, and Lum Chinese ZDP). CPM-M4 is my new fav steel.

For all around toughness and a possible SD role I think the Chinook will do you just fine, blade is probably tougher too. I recall there were some tests on the tip to see how strong it was including shoving the knife into some wood and standing on it.

I have had my Chinook 3 for over a month and it is a great knife. I have used it on several weekend camping trips and it works well as a utility knife. The only issue I have is that the blade shape does not lend itself to doing detailed cutting with the tip. Overall I would rate this as a great medium to heavy duty use knife.

Buy it, you will not be disappointed.
