Spyderco Chinook lock problems?

Hows it going?

I just purchased my second chinook. I traded my first one *sigh* but I felt I needed the comfort of one in my pocket so I bought another.

At any rate, when I recieved mine I noticed the lock had alot of play in it. I knew some play was necessary for a lockback usually. But this play seemed to be ALOT more than my previous Chinook. The play was visual actually. I could see the lock move in its contact with the back of the knife when i pushed down on the blade and let up.

Just was wondering if anyone else thought this amount should be normal or if I should mail back to Spyderco and swap out? Thanks alot.

The Chinook is known to have a bit of play. However, the amount you are describing sounds excessive. If I were you I would send it back to Spyderco. If it is within spec they will tell you so and all you lose is the cost of shipping. If it is wrong they will make it right. Either way, IMO, it is worth the shipping costs to be confident in the knife.

I bought my Chinook just few months ago and I had the same blade-play problem. As I wrote in a thread, it was the first time I met such a problem in a back lock system. Somebody told me “guy, you’ve got a bad apple!”, but I’m beginning to think there are few "good apples" out there!!!
I complained about that on Spyderco web site bat I had no answer.
Bye

Thanks for the info, guys.
I'm thinking about ordering it later in the year. Now that I know theres suppose to be some play in the lock, I won't be "flipping" and shocked when I get the knife.

Mine has no such issues and seems in more or less perfect order.
There is some slight play in mine which i'm told is normal, but it's so discreet you can't even see it, you can only slightly feel it.

I'm starting to get concerned about Spyderco QC, it seems they've been lax lately in such departments, I hear about loose Leaf Blade Lil' Temperances, loose Meerkats, loose forum Vesuvius, and now loose Chinooks. I hope I'm wrong because I really like Spyderco as a company, but it's starting to sound like they're on the downhill.

I just received mine last week. Picture in Spyderco forum. No problems at all. Rock solid.
