When I ordered the JW Smith folder from Larry I noticed he had a Civilian CF model with a plain edge. I had a couple of these with the Tuffram (I think that's it) aluminum handles and the spyder edge. I had always liked the knife and thought if I ever found a straight edge I would get it. Well he had it and I got it! The aluminum handled models had a more rounded handle if I remember correctly. The clip though was a problem as it would work loose and finally stripped out the hole so that I had to take some JB Weld and "mend" it. The handles seem to scuff up easily also.

Well it apears that these shortcomings have been addressed and corrected on the CF version. The handle slabs are fairly thick carbon fiber and there is a single steel liner ( never can figure why they don't put TWO liners on these pieces!:( ) The action is very, very smooth and the lock up is great. There is no wobble whatsoever in this blade. The handle shape is really to my liking with the swelled rear end and narrowed front with a slight swell at the end forming a guard. The clip is flat black and attatched with 3 screws around the pivot. It can be reversed to the other end for tip up carry. There is a lined throng hole, something you don't see much anymore, the lined part that is. The locking bar has a slight half moon cut out to match the cutouts in the carbon fiber and really looks neat and apparently serves as a type of safety feature to keep you from accidently releasing the lock. Sharp? we are talking scary sharp!

All in all a very neat package and made even neater by the Mike Sastre neck sheath I got for it.

Anyone else out there carry such a rig?

I don't have the rig but I do have a Civilian in CF. I bought it from a guy at a gunshow. I don't carry it because it is over the limit for CT. The smooth action is one of the things that I realy love about that knife. After opening it only once I knew I was going to buy it. I carry the smaller Matriarch sometimes but since I got my pistol permit I have been carrying more usefull less agressive designs. Both the Civilian and the Matriarch are great looking knives but I wish the matiarch was available in different handle materials. I would love to have the baby brother in CF as well.

A Matriarch built the same as the CF Civilian, except add a second liner, would certaintly get my attention. The smaller size would be a little easier to carry. Of course I carried the Civilian in my left rear pocket today with no problems whatsoever! I believe I wil save the neck sheath for cold weather carry under my jacket.
