I have been thinking about getting one of these and I have read about the tip being paper thin. I was curious, just how delicate is the tip? Will it break with opening/closing or just break if you use it? I know that the knife is not ment to be used but say you have to use it on a BG, would the tip break and render your blade useless? Thanks in advance...

I have one with the plain edge. the tip is no more fragile than other folders I have. The fragile tip thing has to do with the serrated edge model I think. The serrations are cut to about 3/16" from the tip. It makes the blade more succeptable to breakage.

Well let's also keep in mind the Civvie was built for a very specific purpose. If you're worried about the tip breaking you're probably thinking of using it for something it wasn't meant to be used for.

No I bought it for SD...but what if I have to use it on a bad guy, would the tip break?

Oh I see what you are saying. That's a legitimate concern.

From what I've seen from my Spydercos my gut instinct would be to say no :D

Honestly after reading this account of how someone reacts after getting cut with one of those things I don't think you have anything to worry about.

actually thats a "scenario based an a actual incident" not an actual account, though i am sure a spyderco civilian would cut the heck outta ya, imho a civvy aint the best thing going for SD because its so slash oriented w/out much stabbing ability, i have one(SE) and the tip is thin, ya would wanna be carefull or it would break imho, but its ok, just wouldnt be my first choice.

The tip make break if it catches a belt buckle, demin jacket button, zipper, etc while deployed in a SD situation.

Just my opinion, but... I have a Civilian, SE. That knife's not coming out unless I'm in a pretty hairy situation. And I figure if I have to pay $100-$120 dollars every time I have to pull myself out of a pretty hairy situation, that's fine. One other point, breaking off the tip will not render the knife "useless". I'd certainly replace it, but there's a lot of belly behind that tip. You could also go with the Matriarch. All of the blade, half the price and weight.

Take care

I've rendered thick towels, denim and leather to ribbons w/o any tip damage. It'd have no problem with a human, probably go through zippers and push buttons out of the way. You may dull or chip a tooth on a zipper or rivet. The knife certainly is a disembowler worthy of Hannibal. Now where you would stand a good chance of doing tip damage was if it was dropped, you missed and hit a wall, or for prying.

Per the genesis of the knife. I believe it was origainly designed as a tool to protect women from being attacked in South Africa, hence the name Matriarch, after the female leader of an elephant herd. I believe the first versions were handled in gray frn.

The Civilian and Matriarch are both designed for that ONE occasion in your life.
That is the day you have to protect your life.

Guys, thanks for all your imput...it's much appreciated. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get one. If I don't like it I can always trade it or sell it. :)

The other Spydie I'm looking at is the Paramilitary...that's sweeeeeeet too.

Both are excellent choices!
I bet you'll love your para-millie.
