Spyderco coatings?

How well do they hold up? I've been looking at getting a Para and I'm debating whether to get a coated blade or not.

If anyone can post pics of how the coating wears it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I have found them to be pretty good. I have two coated blades, both Paras.

I think they will handle most things well, possibly cardboard will be a good test though on how good they really are.

Now that I have my new one I must test my older on on some cardboard, see how it holds up.

No coating lasts forever though, if you're gonna use a knife hard.

I have noticed they don't wipe clean as easily as other coated knives. I cut an orange with mine and that left a trail behind that was pretty stubborn.

WD-40 shifted it though. That's good shit.

Being diamond like carbon, it's tougher than other common coatings like Benchmade's BK1 and BT2. Everything that I've cut with my coated Para just leves streaks that will wipe off.

That's what I get with mine. It looks scratched or scuffed, but a little water and it comes right off.

Thanks for the feedback. Any pics showing how the coating wears would be nice.

Generally they don't wear at all. Unless you're cutting open bags of concrete or other abrasive filled material the coating is too hard to scratch. What appear to be scratches or scuffs are usually material the coating has picked up from softer (like copper, chrome, steel, rocks, glass :D etc). These can be difficult to remove sometimes but for the most part you can restore the finish with a decent penetrating oil and wipedown.

Thanks for the info, sounds like it'll hold up to most, if not all, general EDC tasks. Now I just need to decide whether to get a coated or uncoated para. Sorry to go a little OT, but does the uncoated blade get smudges easily like the Endura does?

They do show singns of wear, but that just adds character :)

Normal use doesn't scratch the blade, most of the marks come from just opening and closing it. Dirt in the pivot area enhances that problem.

This Native wasn't actually used, just played with it for a while:

How about the coatings on the black endura and delica? It not the diamond stuff IIRC. How does it hold up?

Those are titanium carbonitride coated. Those coatings have very similar properties to the DLC coating from a knife coating standpoint. I believe my '98 mini socom was TiCN coated, holds up very well. I used that knife as edc for years and did not baby it. Even used it to cut open a few cans of ravioli once when someone forgot the can opener at a cooking demo in college. Coating still looked almost new when I sold it.
