Is Spyderco still operating the collectors program? If so, how do you become a member?

Thanks
Ken

Ferret,

Cheers....just done that and I have emailed Sypderco. I read in one post that the average cost of keeping with the program is $1000 a year!
Can anyone confirm that?

$1000 per year sounds pretty high. We might make 5 or 6 new models in a year.

If thats the case, then I'd be SERIOUSLY interested......are there any "joining fees"?

Ken

There's not so much a joining fee as a "joining purchase".

There are 200 total collectors' spots/numbers. When you join, you receive a number, and all of your knives will be marked with that serial number.

As part of the joining process, you will receive from Spyderco a list of the numbers currently available.

When you register, you are required to purchase all knives that were issued to that number during the time between the last person giving the number up, and you registering for it. For many of the higher numbers, there can be a whole bunch of steel waiting for you. Looking back at the sheet from when I joined, most numbers would require a purchase of about 16 knives - 16 Spyders can get verrry pricey!

Numbers with fewer knives are available, but you will probably miss out on recent issues. I was lucky enough to have only 7 knives on my number (68), but those 7 included a Shabaria, a Lum, and a JD Smith. Add up the pricing on just those 3, and you'll see where this is headed!

Jill at Spyderco was nice enough to break the 7 knives into 3 shipments, which definitely eased the pain.

Another question, please, Sal or Brian: Can collectors request left-handed versions (provided left-handed versions are made available)?

[For example, Bram--in another thread--seemed to suggest that the Gunting would be made in a left-handed version. Sal also mentioned this may be the case for the Temperance as well, I hope. ]

Thanks Ewok.

But just for my own further clarification:

• Variants (I'm assuming this includes left-hand versions, among other things) must be purchased "in addition to" instead of "in lieu of"--is that correct? So I would have to buy both the right-hand and left-hand version, but not the left-hand version only?

• Does a change in steel or handle material also constitute a "variant"?

• How about the Custom Collaborations? If I chose the "all variants" option, would I then have to purchase the Walker carbon fibre, Walker lightweight, and Walker almite?

(Hmm. Maybe I should be asking what constitutes a "variant"?)

Originally posted by Ewok:
Last I heard, there're two flavors: you can opt to receive all variants, or you can opt to receive no variants. Variants are marked with your collector's number, and a V.

BTW, it's been months since I've gotten anything. James? Sal? Jill?

Sal will have to address the upgraded model question, as none have been released in the short time I've been a member (Dec 99).

As for variants, as I understand it, they would go "per SKU", or model number. So the Wegner (C48) and Wegner Jr. (C49), for instance, are seperate models. Variants would include the different variations, plain edge, Spyderedge, combo edge, left hand, colors, etc., available for a particular model.

And those are always in addition to, not in lieu of, a combo edge if offered, or a Spyderedge.

Of course, you're not required to keep them once you've bought them. Anyone desiring JD Smith #68 Spyderedge drop me a line!

Brian, Ewok, thank you. The Dyad (large) was the last new model to be released. Our new engraver won't be here for a few weeks so the model maybe waiting on that.
