Spyderco Customisation

Apologies for double posting this, I tried in general discussion but I thought I'd see if any of the Spyderco fans might have any suggestions.

On of my favoured EDC's has finally given up and after 8 years of abuse its getting retired. As a replacement I have been looking at the Spyderco Junior. I'm pleased with the over all look of the thing I believe it would be both comfortable for me to carry and use, however I prefer my EDC to be part serrated.

I've noted Spyderco don't seem to have this model in combo-edge or part-serrated and I was wondering if anyone could recommend someone in Canada I could approach to see if they would be willing to alter one to my spec?

Thanks

Its a bit rough and ready but this is what I have in mind for my customisation.

My first Junior arrived yesterday and its a great knife and I'm keen to get another ordered and start getting the customisations on.
- Three Veff Serrations
- Thin Red G10 Scales

Any Opinions Welcome

Spyderco developed their own pattern of serrations, been used on every combo edge and fully serrated model from day 1. I can't see them switching to someone elses style in that regard. As far as the red scales are concerned, Spyderco again reserves those for trainer (non-live) models of their knives. Wouldn't make much sense. I suppose you can always have your own scales made, lotsof people already do.

No offense, but Spyderco is somewhat known for their Spyderco-edge. They developed it decades ago and it is still widely used and copied today.

I think in another 20 years we will still see the same type of serrations used by Spyderco (and others). They are not intended to look cool or anything else, they are intended to work...very well.

Not arguing the general point, but exceptions to both rules exist.

The serration pattern on the C27 Jess Horn was not Spyderco's typical Spyderedge...

As for red scales, here's the most recent exception...

...and a prior one...

It might be more accurate to say that since Spyderco began offering trainers, they've reserved red scales for trainers on models for which trainers exist. The Junior isn't SD oriented and no trainer version exists or is likely ever to be offered. So a red G-10 version, while unlikely, can't be ruled out.

Excellent point Paul, thanks for that clarification. I did start thinking about the Persian shortly after I posted that. :)

Thanks for the input gents, this design is not intended as a recommendation for Spyderco, its intended as the basis for a customisation for personal use which I'm aiming to have made to a Spyderco Junior.

The serrations are Veff Angled as Tom Veff seems to be the only person I can find willing to add after market serrations, I'm still playing with this alteration in my head, angled or straight, the knife this is to replace has a 3.5" blade with a 1" serrated section (much like the classic SpyderEdge serrated pattern of single large serrations spaced out by two small serrations. This serration gets quite a bit of use from cutting rope to removing the wings from shot grouse.

The colour of the scales, (again something I'd hoped to have made custom), in more or less the same thickness and dimensions as the factory scales. The colour choice is one of practicality as much as aesthetic. I'm not one for glaring colours in general but I am finding it helpful in finding the knife again once I've put to down on the forest floor or river bank between tasks.

Thanks for the info gents any other comments or advice are welcome.

The Junior appears to be all screw construction so, assuming the liners are not nested, it would appear to be a relatively easy knife for someone to re-scale. The only potential sticky points might be the channels for the wire clip and the (probably staked) lanyard tube, but am sure neither is an insurmountable obstacle. Personally, I'd go orange, rather than red, if visibility was the primary concern. If the Persian is a typical example of red G-10, it's attractive but it seems a bit dark, IMHO, to make a misplaced knife easier to find.

Thanks for the tip on the colour, I'll make sure I eye ball it before making the final decision. I chose Red G10 based on photos I've seen rather than actual hands on. It might be your right I'm best to go for orange or even a blue something that's not going to blend into anything seasonal. I'll make sure I see the actual colour in natural light before deciding.

Your advice is very welcome!

it's still at least a year away (and still not decided.) but my next buy will either be another ti millie or a police 3 with custom ti scales. :)

I found a local custom knife maker who's agree'd to make amendments to the knife more along the lines of a classic Spyderco serration on the rear of portion of the blade giving a combo edge.

I'm still to find / finalise someone able to reproduce the scales in a different colour but one step at a time.

I'll keep posting.

I collected my Spyderco Junior today after the serrations were added and I am VERY happy.

And here it is...

and here it is side by side with the knife it is to replace my 8 year old CRKT M16 if I get half as much service out of the Junior as I've had out of this M16 I'll be even happier than I am now.

Many thanks to Caribou Custom Knives for the excellent workmanship the results of the serration and the correction to manufacturing flaw are fantastic.
