Spyderco D'Allara for $429? I'm in...

reaLLy nice find... you should get it, before i change my mind on collector knives...

Never mind that one, I've got one you can have for $400! Shipped!

Insurance is $200 extra.

I'd only consider your offer if and ONLY if:

1) It comes with a box of some sort
2) It is one of the VERY limited 2,819 models they created
3) It needs to have a completely random production number like 1557 or 1932 or maybe even 1784. You know, the kind that makes these types special.

Wow.

There are so many things wrong with that auction. Not to mention poor grammar and TYPING IN ALL CAPS...

But I can't see Spyderco doing a release of such a strange number as 2,819. And since when is nearly 3,000 pieces a limited edition?

Sure 3,000 isn't mass produced, but it surely doesn't justify the price for a plastic handled knife with some silly logo on it.

Me thinks that auction isn't all it's cracked up to be. If anyone really wants that knife, I've got a few bridges...

I know we're kidding around, but 2819 was the number of people killed in the WTC attacks. I'm sure that's the reason for that particular number.

Am I missing something? Is the knife in the auction NOT one of the Spyderco 9/11 commemoratives?

I didn't buy one, but as I recall each knife did indeed include a piece of I-beam from the two towers and retailed for a few hundred bucks several years ago. A portion of the proceeds (again, IIRC) went to a fund for victims of 9/11.

According to Spyderco's website, it retailed for $225 which usually doesn't mean street price. There may have been an exception with this particular one, I didn't look into buying one when they were available. A starting bid of $429 still seems ridiculous enough to me.

Where did he get this?

WORLD TRADE CENTER 911 COMMEMORATIVE MEERKAT TRIBUTE KNIFE WITH PRESENTATION BOX

I guess if you throw enough words around at random ...

That's why it costs so much. A 9/11 Meerkat would definitely be rare, even though there were 2,819 of them made.

Maybe I'm seeing the picture wrong, but it actually looks like the steel silhouette inlay is missing from the knife. It was the handle inlay that was made from WTC steel: if that was missing then the knife wouldn't really have any collector value, would it?

Did it look that way to anyone else?

I think the guy was taking his pictures with the flash on, and it washed out the contrast of the steel. The FRN looks gray in his pix, and it is black in real life.

The only way I would bid $400 on it is if I sent half to him and half to charity.

There's still something wrong here. The only meerkats in New York are in the Bronx Zoo, not in lower Manhattan.

It wasn't mentioned during advertising but IF you bought the WTC knife from Spyderco they included a Meerkat (knife) for free and a letter saying it was a gift for buyers of the WTC knife, maybe that is where the name came from on the auction, but it wasn't mentioned.
