just bought a spyderco delica 4

it was between the delica 4, endura 4, benchmade folder (unknown what model), or some sort of a fixed blade.... had the nimravas but only in 154cm and didnt want to spend so much on 154cm steel

well I decided for heavy use ill keep my ka-bar 5 1/4" serrated. and I could really use a razor sharp knife.

so I asked the guy behind the counter to show me these knives and I was eyeing the endura and it was pretty nice and larger then in the pictures. and the benchmade was nice but not the model I was really interested in. I then held the delica and while the guy wasnt looking I tested the blade shapness on my finger like I do on all blades and it sliced a layer of my skin off like a hot knife thru butter!!!! (I wasnt trying to do this!!! :) ) I thought "Now thats sharp!" and knowing its vg-10 I was sold. (this is besides the fact that the handle was almost perfect)

(Ive had a couple decent blades such as a buck 110 and gerber folder/hunter knife, smith and wesson, and a couple others so Ive learned how to tell when a blade is sharp for the most part but just wasnt prepared for the delica... :) )

the only thing Im not super crazy about is one hand opening. maybe its just my hand but I can only get it 1/2 way open using the hole unless I try really hard... dont get me wrong I like it more then a screw type setup that can come apart like my kershaw ken onion II did. all im saying is its not perfect for me.

conclusion:

this is my EDC, and I dought its going anywhere but on my sides at all times :D

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

You got a great knife. I bet you get used to the opening hole. There is also a Delica Wave, with an additional opening mechanism that you just have to pull the knife out of your pocket to activate.

Ive searched all my options and steels but the shop I went to didnt carry the wave and I wear cheap jeans... it would most likely tear my jeans after a short while. (cheap jeans because I work in a construction environment... cant buy expensive jeans when they rip so I buy thin cheaper ones so I can replace them if they rip)

im sure ill get used to the hole method... ive been wanting a spyderco since about 4 months ago but never got around to it. now that I have one im happy :p

I've always liked a thumbstud/liner lock combination as all you have to do is give the stud a little flick and the blade pops right out (if its correctly adjusted). I'm starting to think the hole does work better with a lockback though.

Once your hand gets used to it you'll have it opened before you can think about it. Congratulations on a great purchase. My first knife outside of a sak was a delica and after 12 years it is still my work/beater knife of choice.

The D4 is a no nonsense, quality user that will last you a lifetime for sure.

Mine has been in my pocket since they came out and other than clip wear is still in nearly perfect condition.

It will be retired for a Caly III when I get the funds for it, but the Delica has been great for me.

A warning though, these knives are addictive. I bought the D4 and didn't really like lockbacks at the time. Now I've sold off all my liner/axis locks and cant stop buying these little bits of steel with a hole in them.

Are you opening it with your left or right hand?

You will definately get used to the opening. If you use the wrist flick method you only really need to start the blade with your thumb and inertia does the reset. Practice and it will come!!

right hand opening and its a bit easier now. just a matter of getting used to it.

I personally am becoming fond of the knife. now all I have to find out is how durable it is... no I have no plans of abusing the knife as that can get expensive fast. (doesnt help to leave them out on a table at a party while drinking... thats why I bought the delica as my last edc was my buck 110... heavy but effective)

All Spyderco's (even the shiny SS and insert handle ones like the Kopa) are solid users.

My Delica hasn't been abused either, but it has seen hard use and has been a great knife. If I were to blow out the pocket lint from the inside it would look nearly new aside from some clip wear.

Sal Glesser (the owner of Spyderco) designed this knife to be USED. Don't let him down. :)

I love the delica. It's rock solid and just the right size. I had to replace my old one last time I flew somewhere because TSA stole it out of my checked baggage. Ticked me off. They didn't even leave a note. I guess I could get it back on ebay if I look long enough, but what the heck. It's not terribly expensive. Next time I'll bury it in the bottom of the bag in a shoe or something.

Hi IceWaLL,

The Delica is a tough piece. Many years of refinement. Hope you enjoy it and thanx for the support.

Good choice:) Definitely one of my favorites. I own 5 of 'em, including the new BRG/ZDP one:) Most used is a PE one/VG-10 - I actually own two of those - a backup in case I lose one. Considering how much I've used it since I got it, it hasn't flinched at anything I've thrown at it. I'm not a heavy user, but I use mine a lot.

I have the zdp-189 with the green handles in a custom neck sheath on me almost 24/7. My first knife was a delica and that are simply awesome knives. For the money they cant be beat.
