Picked these up today. Are these normally tight? Will they break in? I have loosened the pivot screw quite a bit ) afraid it will fall out and still very hard to flip open with the hole.

Anyway:

Is this your first Spyderco lockback? It will smooth out over time but will never be loose. The best thing to do is tighten the screw back up and work the action over the next few days. This should smooth it out. Some of the lockback never loosen up enough to flick. But they will be smooth.

Well that's pretty cool! I thought about doing that very same thing a few years back, but never got around to it.

Absolutely not designed as flippers. :) They have that lock back opening and closing bias you have to overcome and it should always be there as long as it isn't broken. When it is almost closed let go of the blade and it should snap shut the rest of the way. Open it slightly and let go and it will likewise close itself from the springs pressure. That is what I'm talking about when I say "bias".

Nice mods.

What he said.

All my Delicas eventually loosened up, most to be flickable.

Thanks guys for the discussion. Yes these are my first Spyderco lock backs. I will give them a workout :) They feel really cheap to me, but I am coming from Techno, Slysz Bowie, and PPT. Hopefully they will grow on me.

Nice and easy mod - looks great  The Delica isn't the most rugged knife - compared to the ones you mention - but they can serve you well.

I've had mine for 11 years. Still doesn't flick.

I have tons of Spydies from high end ti to the lowly frn knives. The frn models are all my hardest users. They are tough as nails. Carry and use the Delica and you will find your love growing. ;)

Don't overtighten the lockbar pivot screw. That one has nearly as much effect on the smoothness and feel of the knife as the blade pivot.
They will break in nicely, too. I like mine to start off a bit tight.

And you can't get a Delica expecting it to impress you in hand as much as a Slysz Bowie...?
But that said, it's funny you say they feel "cheap" now, but I bet after using them for a good while you'll find they slice and dice just as well and if not better than any of those knives you listed comparing them to.

The perfect work knife for me but not the pocket jewel you mentioned. Put it in your pocket and try to loose it on a hard day of work with that tight clip, or drop it in some gunt and then go carve a pumpkin for Halloween. its more than tough enough for most daily challenges, I prefer its big brother the Endura and am not nice to it at all. I have other knives for that. If they dont work for you let us know and post them for sell, id like the black with the orange back spacer!

they may feel 'cheap' to you now, but you'll find them to be excellent daily carry knives.

The Delica is the Cat's pajamas. It is the one knife I would not want to be without.

I really like the way the changing of the back straps turned out. Was it difficult to do?

Not difficult at all. The most challenging is getting the lock bar pin to line up while pressing down and aligning the bar. There is a youtube video on taking apart and putting back together.
