I have an Aus8 delica with serrated edge that was a gift from a now departed good friend. It was a law enforcement duty knife so it has a lot of character from being used as a door knocker, seat cutter, and all kinds if things people would never use a knife for. A small piece of the tip is broken off and about a year ago it fell onto a hard floor andthe clip just snapped off where the bend touches the body of the knife. What should I expect in terns of result and charges if I send this in for repair?

It has the molded clip I'm assuming?
It can be reground but you're out of luck with that pocket clip most likely.

Leave it as is.

Buy a new (or used) Delica for a user. Cost: a few bucks.

Your gifted knife with such character from honorable use by a departed good friend? Priceless.

Each mark a reminder of his life and work and friendship.

Each of his groomsmen received one new, so i got to put the dents/scratches on it myself. It carries the same sentiment though. Thought about making sure my son gets it one day in serviceable condition though. Wondering if the recontour a blade with a couple mm break of the tip or if they replace. Looks like they are VG10 now and not Aus8...

Me too, i put it somewhere safe and am now trying to recall where exactly where that was...[emoji53] ...maybe replace clip snd have someone local recontour tip to keep it original if factory doesn't do that. I've never sharpened it.

I had a Manix 2 with a few mm broken off the tip reground by Spyderco this year in Golden Co. It was really a seamless experience and in my case the only cost was the $5 for return shipping. The work was impeccable, but of course changes the blade shape slightly. I hand wrote them a little note explaining how it broke and about 4 weeks later it was returned (to Canada!), fixed, along with a thoughtful letter. They were courteous and classy all the way and restored my Manix back to usable. If you want it repaired I wouldn't hesitate to contact them, telling them the history of the knife. I'm out of town right now or I'd include some photos. http://m.spyderco.com/edge-u-cation/

A small piece off the tip is easily repaired with simple honing equipment. If it truly is a small piece off the tip, you can grind it out yourself. It will take some time depending on what you use for sharpening. I fixed a broken tip on an original Manix years ago and it looks and performs fine today. And, unless I'm mistaken, Spyderco will replace clips for a small fee. If you decide to send it to Spyderco for tip repair, you can get the clip replaced at the same time.

I can't say for certain, but if it's just "a couple mm" broken off your Delica's tip, Spyderco would probably just regrind it a bit for free. I can say for certain that they don't replace blades even on screw construction knives, much less for one put together with flush pins. A new clip, assuming they still have one available that fits the older Delica 2, would probably cost you around $5.

Hi OP, I would send it to Spyderco and have them repair the clip and tip. Like Deacon said, if it's really just a couple of mm then they will likely grind that out for you. If not then there a number of competent members on here who I'm sure would happily do the work or you can very easily do it yourself.

I understand the sentiment of those who say "leave it as it is" but if it had belonged to my friend, I would restore it to proper functioning condition. Actually I did just that with an old Benchmade 940 that belonged to a deceased friend. Sent it to Benchmade and had them fix it up and they did a great job. The knife still had all its dings and scratches on the handle so still maintained its "character" but was made functional again.

It's threads like this, and the fact that I've done a few repairs on some traditionals that make me wish I would have never given away both of my 90s era SE Enduras. Looking back, I could have sent them to Spyderco or fixed them myself. But they went to good homes so I'm not that bent about it.

Good luck OP!

As promised...looks lik its a delica 3, Aus-6.

Not sure if years of carrying it clipped to the collar of my tac boots put too much stress on the clip or if with real world use that's just an expected wear and tear item to service, not that i think any other brand would have fared any better..

$5.90 shipped for replacement clip. What do you experienced Spydie owners recommend for sharpening a full serrated blade? What do I ask from a local sharpener to make sure they're qualified? I had a good Henckels kitchen knife destroyed by an allegedly great local knife sharpener awhile back...

Do you own a SharpMaker?
Works pretty well with serrations and YouTube has a few videos for some pointers.
I'd stay away from local sharpening guys unless you've actually seen their work on serrations. I've heard some horrific stories around here.
You can most likely find someone right here on the forum that can do the job.

With all the history behind it, i would leave it as is...
Good reason to buy a new Spyderco to EDC :D
