Spyderco Delica steel question

There will be a much longer post later on this week with my thoughts about the Delica. However, I just want to see if there have been any rumors that we will ever see steels like s30v, s35vn or CTS-XHP as a steel in the Delica? I know it is a Japanese production knife and hence the use of Japanese steel, but I thought I once read that some American steel may be brought over to the Seki plant. Maybe I am just dreaming though.

I seriously doubt the Delica will be offered in those steels, but you never know. I do think we can expect some additional Japanese steels in the Delica like we have had in the past. Still, a Delica in S35VN would be the cat's pajamas.

I couldn't agree more on the s35vn. While there is noting wrong with VG10, honestly it is a good steel. I LOVE how long the working edge of s35vn lasts and to me it is the quintessential EDC steel. I like to go AT least 1-2 weeks between sharpening and with VG10 I usually have to every 3-4 days. On s35vn steel I was good for close to a month.

Supposedly the new ATR is going to be S30v that Spyderco shipped to Japan...

My understanding was that we would see more offerings in the future, if they were successful working with it. What that means for existing designs, we can only speculate...

Interesting post. Do you need help with sharpening or are you just looking for something different?

No I am quite good at sharpening and have not problem with many steels including s110v, though ZDP-189 can be a pain at times. I LOVE the Delica platform, seriously I never bought one as my earlier preference in this size was a CRK small micarta 21. However after obtaining a Delica 2 months ago, I am simply floored on how great it is. So floored I sold off all my CRKs (but that comes in the next post). While VG-10 is a GOOD steel, I much prefer my EDC knives to have a steel with a working edge that lasts longer. My favorite go to EDC steels have been Spydercos s30v (they just get their HT perfect in this steel), Spydercos s35vn (again HT is on point) and Cold Steel's CTS-XHP (again perfect HT done by them). If the Delica had s30v or s35vn I could retire from the knife game.

There are so many steels I would like to try from Japan. Unfortunately price/cost seems to be an obstacle. I am not that excited about sending US steels there unless it means we can get some exotic Japanese steels mailed here. If so then I would like to buy a Military in XVC5 or HAP72. If not then I will take either one of them or some other cool steel from Hitachi in a Stretch2 frn. ;) I just think that sending our steels there is limiting our experiences. If those exotic Japanese steels are not feasible due to cost then so be it but I can at least dream, right?

Spyderco has such a good thing going with the Delica being produced in Japan that I am not sure you will see a non Japanese steel version made. The did so the sprint run in super blue but that is also a Japanese steel. But one of the great things about this forum is we can always hope.

is it really worth more than double the price of a production Delica?

Only you can answer that question , but I will say that I managed to snap the tip off my Hap40's blade due to my stupidity , I didn't hesitate for one second getting another .

The question also is, what price do you think the Delica would be with the steels mentioned in the OP? It sure wouldn't stay the same.

I just meant if you want one of the HAP40 ones, you're spending $150 now, while a production model is $65. I assume any sprints would be close to the original hap40 price, still under $100.

I could justify an extra $30-$40, but not more than double on the after market
