Spyderco Delica Wave 4 vs Kershaw Leek

I'm trying to pick between these two knives for EDC, and was looking at the delica 4 waved in vg10 and kershaw in g10/s30v.

I considered getting both, but didn't see a point in getting two plain edge knives that were roughly the same size. Which opening mechanism do you feel is easier/more comfortable, or which knife has the better overall design?

I was also thinking about getting the delica 4 in spyderedge, but it doesn't seem like that it comes in spyderedge with a wave... is the wave that big a deal? Also, does the wave affect the legality of the knife in any way? (I live in NYC.) Along those lines... are both of these knives street legal? :P

Well I have a leek and I absolutely love it but I am getting a Delica 4 (no wave-plain edge) for my EDC because spring assisted knives are illegal in my city and probably even yours- check your city ordinence. Plus the speed safe mechinism is pretty frightening when you use it and I would imagine some people would freak out if you opened it. So i say get yourself a leek for a toy and around the house and a delica for your EDC. Another great thing about the delica is that it looks friendly and more like a work knife. If a cop were to pull ya over and ask to see that knife in your pocket I think he would be much less hostile with you if you had a delica instead of a "switchblade-like" leek.

Just make sure you don't get the wave caught in the corner of your pocket while pulling out the delica:D

I think the Leek is too slippery and I hate assisted opening knives. They wear out in a short time.
The Delica is one of the toughest longest lasting knives on the market.

Just curious, what was the last time that happened to anyone?
Well, if you were speeding and the cop pulled you over and noticed that shiny knife clipped to your pocket...he may just ask to see it. I think you were thinking about a cop pulling you over just because you had a knife in your pocket :p

I do not like AO's, and AM a huge Spyderco fan; so therefore I would suggest the D4 waved.

No, not really. Unlike the Leek, which is always going to be assisted, you can still open the Delica wave regularly if you need to.

If that is the case, why do they only offer the wave version in plain edge? Shouldn't the wave be more popular due to increased functionality at no substantial extra cost?

I am not a fan of AO's at all, except for the one custom that I carry, but that is a totaly different story. I don't believe that the Kershaw is as good a knife even though the materials are nice. Kershaw's knives aren't made as well as Spyderco's are and I have never kept one longer than a month or two. 3 of them needed to go back for faulty actions. I won't buy one again. Spyderco on the other hand is great and I have very rarely had an issue with one. I carry a Delica 4 regularly. In fact I have one in my pocket as I write this. I don't care for the wave feature so much, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't get one with a wave. The construction and quality is great. I have carried a Delica in some way or form for the last 15 years. It is the only knife I keep on replacing when it is worn out or lost. The others are just fly by night. As far as the AO opening Vs. cop thing goes? I have been a military cop for the last 11 years and have arrested more people than I care to think about. I have never, nor have I ever seen anyone get in trouble for an assisted opener. They are not switchblades by description because a switchblade needs to be operated by a button in the handle releasing a spring to open the knife. I am not touching on gravity knives or anything like that, but it definately isn't a switchblade. The opeing mechanism is a flipper on the blade itself. That and I have never seen a blade in a driver's pocket on a traffic stop. I would have to be hovering over them to do so. That and what was my probable cause to search the guy in the first place? Just seeing the clip isn't PC and I couldn't search someone on that alone unless they commit an offense warranting a search incident to arrest. That or if they match the description of a suspect that was carrying a weapon and I needed to identify them.

s30v is better than vg10? Another factor is that in order to get the s30v and g10... I have to pay almost twice the price of the delica or 440a regular leek. But thats not that big a deal to me, since both knives are under 100.

As a sidenote... right now I'm edc'ing a benchmade 43. Keeps me entertained and I'm decent at flipping... but the legality of the situation makes me a little nervous sometimes.

Leek..... better materials/construction, assisted opening, and one hell of a warranty.

Why do you feel the Leek has "better construction" than the Delica?

Best wishes,
