At the Blade Show in Atlanta I looked at a Spyderco Delica ZDP189 and was amazed to find it "tree topping" sharp right "out of the box". Spyderco was not selling at the show so I came home and ordered one online. I was somewhat disappointed to find that the one that I purchased would not even shave or cut paper. Not really disappointed in the knife....I put it on the paper wheels and had it tree topping in short order just wondering if I got one that missed a sharpening step or if the "show knives" were maybe jazzed up a bit!

My Caly3 would top hairs no problem. My Orange Military would splice them. :D

Might be a QC mishap. Normally Spyderco has excellent out of the box sharpness.

my delica 4 is pretty freakin sharp out of the box.

the only knife that was sharper out of the box for me was a fallkniven PXL and that includes a small sebenza 21.

i got the delica on a whim after reading some forum posts on spyderco: i thought i would try it and i got it while buying a jacket at an outfitter a couple of weeks ago.

the sharpness, and the comfort of the spyder-hole deployment vs. a thumb stud made me a spyderco fan in a few days of owning one.

definently 'worth the trip to Acton'.

My Endura ZDP is sharp enough to cut paper out of the box, but not quit hair popping, let alone hair splitting. I'm fine with it, because I'd rather not have my larger folder hair splitting sharp and risk chipping.

Just because it's sharp doesn't make it more prone to chipping. Thinning the edge out (like 10-12 degrees inclusive) and torquing the blade causes chipping. ZDP can handle razor thin edges if you're careful with it.

Key to ZDP-189 is to keep it sharp. Once it goes dull it's a pain to sharpen back up.

Most of my Spydercos have not been sharp out of the box. My E4 ZDP was the exception.

This Endura is one of my larger EDC beaters. It defeats the purpose if I have to be too careful with it. For its purpose paper-cutting sharp is good enough.
