To all:

Please check out the latest installment in Spyderco's Designer's Insight Series. It features noted custom knifemaker Phil Wilson explaining the features and benefits of his South Fork fixed-blade design.

Stay safe,

Mike

If you watch the video it's pretty clear he means it to be an all purpose outdoorsman's knife, i.e. something you'd use to potentially fillet fish. The upswept spine is probably a result of that. I've never actually used a fillet knife that wasn't upswept like that at least a little bit.

Does anyone know why the blade was designed with an upswept spine?

It's the Trailing Point blade design. :)

Very cool video. I like how Phil explains that sharpening in the field is not as important as a knife that will not dull quickly. It's great to own a knife that has super steel for this very reason. I know lots of people worrk about "how hard is X steel to sharpen?". It really doesn't matter with S90V as it retains a working edge for a pretty long time. ;)

Nice vid. I'd like to get a South Fork. Well, I know I will but hopefully soon.

If the knife just keeps on cutting there isn't a need to sharpen it in the field, sharpening is an inconvenience that really shouldn't be needed if the correct knife/steel is chosen in the 1st place.

The reason why steels like S90V exist in the knife industry in the 1st place.
