Hey guys,

someone recently had a topic about benchmade DLC (which turned out to be bk1), but didn't see any dicussion of Spyderco DLC. I just got a DLC coated millie with camo handle and it's awesome.

So what do you guys think? Is this coating just as strong as a normal dlc coar? Is it very wear resistant or will it scratch easily? Pics would be awesome.

Thanks guys.

DLC coating is DLC coating, its not going to wear off easy.

Hi Heilheit,

DLC coating was the strongest most durable coating we could find. What is it you are trying to find out?

sal

My Bechmade DLCs show more wear than my Kershaws and Spydercos. I have an all black Mille and 2 Delicas and 1 Endura with black blades, they have some smooth spots in the texture but no chipping or scratching what so ever and it has been used hhhhaarrrrrdddd!!!. For my Griptillian I cannot say the same but I love it anyway.

The BM grip does not have a DLC coating.

These two have seen LOTS of use and though the millie looks worn, its not, its just dirty.

Thanks for this reply. I'm used to black coatings that are extremely weak and would scratch off immediately. I started getting weary because i saw some specks where it seems the dlc coating had come off. I wanted to make sure I could use this awesome knife without being worried the blade would look mangled after use. I know some like this look, but I sure don't. Thanks for this awesome knife though Sal and I can't wait to pick up a RIL Ti millie ;)

Wow! This is very nice. I'm much more confident of the coating now. Awesome picture man.

Believe it or not but the ZT has (for testing and use) cut lots of drywall, carpet, regular cardboard, recycled cardboard (takes the edge OFF good 1095 in 6in), rope of all kinds, and many other things. You can see some wear when you look close but its still not through the coating yet. The millie is my brother's and I know he uses it a lot, its been his main knife for over a year now. I was wrong to say that there is no damage, he showed me a small mark on the back from cutting a pop can and the small grey specs don't seem to come off but it looks more like tin stuck to the surface

I could be wrong but I think the coatings hardness is around Rc70

DLC is one of the toughest coatings known. The gray marks on your brother's knife are definitely abraded tin/aluminum. If he scrubs it good enough, the gray will come off. I used my DLC-coated Pro-Tech to cut a bunch of aluminum window screen and it got totally discolored. I thought I had damaged it, but it was just a coating of aluminum that had rubbed off the screen onto the knife. When it started to fade back to black I realized it was just aluminum stuck to the blade and scrubbed the rest off and it looked completely new again. I still use the knife for EDC and it still looks nearly brand new after 2 years of nearly daily use.

Note that Benchmade's black coating is NOT DLC and is nowhere near as tough.

Well, I opened the top foil sheath that you find on just about every wine bottle, and it scratched my Paramilitary coating on the blade. Im pretty surprised to say the least.

The only thing that scratches my DLC is my DMTs. I am sure there are cutting jobs that eventually will wear this stuff down, but suffice to say the coating is VERY durable.

I bet that the foil is lead...I also bet that it did not scratch the coating but rather the foil scratched and embedded in the blade (like a wax crayon might). Try scrubbing the "scratch" with a plastic scrubber or pencil eraser.

Works great unit!

"fade back to black" -Great Song

This couldn't be more true!
When I first received my black on black para I went to town on it to test out the DLC and after getting it all marked up and proud to see wear....I wiped it down with a cleaning rag and the knife was new again.

The eraser method is not really working. Well, it worked on a few marks, but there are still some stubborn marks that might actually be scratches. or, just really deep material embedded in the DLC

I don't get it, what's up with a few scratches? If you don't like scratches on your coated or satin blades keep em in the safe. Don't use em, don't sharpen em, don't even look at em.

DLC = DIAMOND like carbon

It's tough... obviously it will scratch.. but that is why I try to buy non-coated blades...

non coated blades look better after use than a scratched up coated... just IMO

nothing really to get. I try to keep my blades clean and clear of any foreign substances, and if there is indeed something there that doesnt belong, I try to rid that substance.

Try some Bon Ami with a damp cloth.
